Sofia Machray - Gig Review: Sofia Machray @ Meow, Wellington - 11/08/2023

13 Aug 2023 // A review by Catherine Bullock
On Friday, I had the pleasure of being a part of the bustling crowd at the Te-Whanganui-a-Tara leg of Sofia Machray’s Language of Flowers EP Release Tour!

The night began with Mirror Ritual’s dreamy, percussion-heavy rock. Their set was full of delayed guitar, lush synths, crashing drums, and bass that you could feel in your chest. Their set was perfectly balanced, making sure to include instrumental numbers where their musicianship was on full display. The crowds were nodding their heads and enjoying the energy they were creating. Even bringing out a flute for one of their pieces, Mirror Ritual felt like they were mind-reading each other the whole night, vibrating the whole room with their incredible dynamic range. Mirror Ritual showcased fantastic stage presence, teasing new and soon-to-be-released music a couple of times throughout the night, and overall was such a fantastic act to watch.

In the break between acts, watching the setup was mesmerising! Sofia is strong with the flowers theme, the projection showcasing flowers blooming, there were flowers on her mic stand, and when Sofia came out, she was draped in a flowing dress, encapsulating the vibes of her music so well. The audience was filled with Sofia’s long-time fans, close friends, fans of the indie music scene, and even the person who sewed her gorgeous dress! It was so lovely to see a loyal crowd, with partners swaging, and long-time fans clapping during the bridge of one of the songs. Sofia’s band was tight, and it fit together so well! The cello melted into Sofia’s voice, and the drums, bass, and guitar all had their moments to shine, uplifting each song we heard from the EP. My personal favourite of the night was hearing Between Now and Then live, almost being reinvented with the full band.

I thought it was so sweet that towards the end of the night, Sofia held up a massive list of people to thank, making sure that everyone that was a part of making the EP and tour come together, was acknowledged, and appreciated. Sofia had the crowd in the palm of her hand the whole night, and she treated us to one more song at the end, closing the show with an obvious fan favourite - squeals of joy could be heard sporadically around the venue. She brought out her harmonica for what I would regard as the perfect song to end on, finishing the night with the lyrics “carry me home.”

This was such an exciting night, and a wonderful leg of the tour for Sofia Machray’s debut EP Language of Flowers.

About Sofia Machray

Described by pop-culture magazine Sniffers as ‘captivating', Sofia Machray is an independent dream-rock singer-songwriter from the heart of the mountains in Arrowtown, New Zealand. Stretching out over moody rockers and soft-burning hooks Sofia delved into the realm of indie music from a young age as a self-taught guitarist from 6 years old. Drawing on timeless concepts and the vast landscapes that raised, she began to cultivate and express herself through the medium of songwriting. In 2018 she made the move to Wellington to study music at Massey University where she met her 4-piece support band.

Becoming a strong forerunner in New Zealand’s independent scene, Machray was quick to win the hearts of music lovers close to home and abroad. Touring Aotearoa off the back of her debut single Handstands in 2020, the song went on to chart number 1 on various independent radio stations and led to her sharing stages with indie icons such as Palace, Wax Mustang, Dolphin Friendly, Ha The Unclear, and Racing.

2023 saw the release of Machray's dreamy debut record Language Of Flowers which attracted solid attention and support from both international/local media earning its spot on the Student Radio Network chats with multiple tracks such as Petals In The Rain, Foundations, and Crumbs climbing to number 1.

CAROUSE - Album Review: Inside Out
14 Oct 2024 // by Catherine Bullock
Inside Out is the newest release and the debut album of CAROUSE, an Otautahi/Christchurch based singer-songwriter. This album is listed as a pop album; however, the easy listening, blues, folk, and country roots are obvious, especially in the instrumentation and the lush solos throughout the record.

A dark, unique voice in both writing and music, Mel Parsons has blessed us with a gorgeous 8-Track Album dubbed Sabotage. Fraser Ross - Album Review: Thunderhead
21 Mar 2024 // by Catherine Bullock
Thunderhead is the indie-folk new album release from Otautahi singer-songwriter Fraser Ross, and it is wonderfully expansive, and beautifully attentive. The storytelling is intricate, and the sound is cohesive, transporting you to rolling hills and small corner street dairies in places that feel like the middle of nowhere.

The Flaming Bridges - Album Review: Fear and Loathing in Oamaru

Authentic, pared back, and captivating, The Flaming Bridges’ new album Fear and Loathing in Oamaru in an incredibly captivating collection of folk songs and stories. This album expertly flips between songs where the focal point of the songs are simply the voice of Matthew P Schobs and layered guitar and complex instrumental landscapes.

A perfect introduction, Acrylic Monday is a lyrical, mostly instrumental beginning to a killer new album, The Everything Under Your Feet by Fool of Stars. The opening song showcases each part of the band, the lyrical guitar, sparkling drums and synthesisers, and a taste of the raw vocals yet to come on the album.
