Nathan Grey - EP Review: Greatness

24 Aug 2024 // A review by Scarlett Walsh

Greatness EP is the August 2024 release from Nathan Grey, a multi-talented artist hailing from Taupo (Ngati Tuwharetoa). This 4 minute 12 second debut was produced by Beatspun LTD which is a studio based in Tamaki Makaurau. The EP cover is a photo of Grey at his music set up, where we can see a variety of his instruments side by side with him. Nathan’s initials are cleverly highlighted within the title on the EP cover.

The first track, Greatness, has a rhythmic beat, much like a heart, which stood out to me from the very first listen. We are introduced to Grey’s silky vocals and invited into his musings, achieving an intimate listening experience. The pacing of this inspiring track starts to slow down at the 2:47 mark, shifting to an enchanting atmosphere. The lyrics continue to portray a tale of self-reflection:

I look up at the sky, using it to guide me through

Nothing gonna stop me

I’m gonna take this journey

There is a vulnerability about sharing such introspective thoughts with a listener, however, this quality to Nathan’s lyricism draws you in.

Guitar picking and layered harmonies give Tell Me Something more of a dreamy Cali desert vibe compared to the others. You are taken by the hand us to crossroad between allure and desire. The choruses for ‘Tell me something’ and Don’t Mean Nothing are formed by the title of the track repeated, which creates a break between the thoughtful story-telling that is found in the verses on this EP. The composition of the tracks are not spoiled by this; they felt much like two sides of the same coin or perhaps sister songs.

Tell Me Something is a perfect precursor for the final track of the EP Every Little Piece Of Me. This song feels like being in love! We delve into more of a blues composition on this song compared to the others; a sultry bass line, piano, velvety brass. Grey’s vocals are smooth as butter expressing his adoration: “we could spend eternity; I’ve tried to show you all these things so that you can see every little piece of me”.

Nathan Grey has a confidence and command of his vocal ability and range which is presented to us across each of the four songs. This EP sweeps its listener up in a passionate and introspective experience. There is an assuredness of his sound as an artist, where Nathan Grey presents us with thoughtful lyrics and a throughline of soulful R&B melodies. Influence from Grey’s family have provided a wonderful environment to nurture his musical talent. I look forward to seeing what comes next for Nathan Grey, if this EP is any indication, it will be Greatness.

About Nathan Grey

As a passionate and aspiring young artist, Nathan Grey channels his journey into the language of music. Motivated by the desire to connect with fellow young individuals, he uses his music as a powerful expression, resonating with shared experiences and emotions.

Hailing from Taupo (Ngati Tuwharetoa) New Zealand, Nathan embarked on his musical journey at a tender age, ignited by an intrinsic family passion for music. Growing up in an environment where music was a cherished tradition, Nathan's household was enriched by the harmonies of a mother who, herself, attained a Grade 8 and post-graduate certification from the Trinity College of London in classical piano. This familial immersion provided Nathan not only with a wealth of resources but also unwavering support, fostering an environment where his musical aspirations could flourish. Surrounded by these influences, Nathan dreamt big and explored his musical talents, firmly establishing the foundation of his artistic pathway.

Nathan's musical influences are a dynamic fusion of the smooth, contemporary sounds of Masego, Tom Misch, and FKJ, while growing up immersed in the soulful R&B tunes of Boyz II Men and Eric Benet. This eclectic mix has not only shaped his love for soulful melodies but has become the cornerstone for his unique style, infusing his compositions with the silky rhythms and heartfelt lyricism that define his musical identity.
