Meff Zexx - EP Review: Tahi

19 Nov 2024 // A review by Gaby Ivanov-Giraldo

Meff Zexx is an experimental duo from Wellington that melds minimalism, post-rock, ambient, black metal, and stoner rock into their own sound. They recently performed at Valhalla this past October and have released a new two-track EP titled Tahi. The name 'Meff Zexx' certainly caught my curiosity. I wonder what inspired the name—though if there’s no reason, that’s obviously still badass.

Ra is a sludgy, fuzzy, and distorted opener to the EP, perfect for fans who feast on the tinny and raw sound of stoner rock and its kin. It's so stripped back; it almost leaves you wondering what you’re even listening to instrumentally.

Early experimental rock pioneers like Sonic Youth, Black Sabbath, and Sepultura laid the groundwork for this genre. Their influence is obvious in bands like Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Melvins, and Nail Bomb, who continue to characterise experimental post-rock and also diverge from genres such as indie, punk, and metal.

Experiencing Track Two, Marama, I’d describe it as the more vigorous and bass-heavy of the two tracks, featuring a powerful riff towards the end of its 11-minutes. The minimalist guitar riffs and bassline, combined with the grittiness of the drums make a glorious little ballad; not for the pigeon hearted. I see this definitely resonating with a live crowd, as I know nothing beats the raw existentialism of a dimly lit venue!

Both tracks have a harsh and emotionally intense element to them, which I’d liken to stress or fear personally, but equally to the slow-burn of anger or sadness. Emotional release is a major draw-in for listeners of heavier genres, as one can feel a sense of comfort in the unease and familiarity.

This is definitely a band I’d buy tickets to see—not just for the music, but for the experience.

Commentary aside, I absolutely rate this band and thoroughly enjoyed their new EP. The album artwork is also delightfully unconventional... a Godzilla taniwha!? Genius. Go check them out on streaming sites and be sure to give them a follow!
