AvonRose - EP Review: Gruno

18 Dec 2024 // A review by Gaby Ivanov-Giraldo

Gruno is the new 9-track EP by AvonRose, and it's nothing short of a heavy music masterpiece. I stumbled upon this band while hunting for a dark, doom metal vibe, and boy, did they deliver!

Pollen... kicks off the album with a low, bassy hum—soft yet bold with a slowed-down drum beat that's basically addictive. Seven Sides Blind is an absolute gem, probably my second favourite on the EP. It’s so distorted I’m literally head-banging while writing this review, swaying in my chair like I'm undergoing an exorcism. Okay, let’s move on before I start levitating…

The track Time - now that's interesting. It's fuzzy as sh*t but also pretty bouncy, making you want to clown around in the pit for sure. The effects are killer, and the drumming? The fills halfway through the track are everything. Hotbox is clever, opening with an ambient spookiness that’s reminiscent of Electric Wizard. The sludgy vocals are pure doom metal goodness.

Missing Sleep starts off with a Sabbath-like feel, then morphs into a catchy tune with some indie vocals that creep in. So creative and infectious... with a touch of The Breeders, perhaps? Whether they borrowed that sound or crafted it themselves, I’m forever playing catch-up. The lyrics are metal AF — just brilliant!

Gruno, however. THIS is my favourite track, hands down. It's smart, inventive, and fun — an amalgamation of genres and taste, all within the perfect windows of sound. This track deserves its own t-shirt, just like the album cover. It's got some musical ingenuity that runs through the whole EP. This would be killer on vinyl. Blast it!

Sad is a character-filled track with stellar opening vocals and some gut-wrenching screams. Test The Light blends indie and doom metal vibes seamlessly. Mord opens with a chilling, Tool-like intro, and the unique, heavy verses keep you hooked. The guitar distortion is kept throughout, and it’s so damn good. The vocal shift two-thirds in? Pure brilliance. It echoes Bongzilla!? Definitely one to add to your streams this summer!
