Real Gods Are Blue - Album Review: I

31 Jan 2025 // A review by Kerry MB

Real Gods Are Blue may not be a familiar name to you yet, but I bet the name James Castady-Kristament is.

For those who are in the know, James Castady-Kristament has been around for a really long time. Long enough that he has a string of albums under his belt (since 2007) and a continuing mad amount of talent.

So it’s no surprise to anyone that he’s still very much around in 2025 and creating new and wonderful things. Real Gods Are Blue is his latest all metal project, and like everything he touches, it turns to gold.

In his own words, James says their newest album I is “micro mixes” a verse and a chorus about a minute long. Basically the gist of the song”

Intrigued yet?

Let’s dive on in.

Made up of ‘Side A’ and ‘Side B’ with 10 and 11 tracks, respectively. Track listing names will get you nowhere if you judge a book by its cover. The real unfurling is as always, in the unveiling of the track. Going back to what James says about each track being basically a snippet of a song, well that’s where it starts to blur the lines of where one song starts and ends, it’s kind of fun and also a little bit challenging to review.

Starting off with BBTF on ‘Side A’ - be prepared for some hilarity in his unique lyrical approach on this one. It’s a hard, fast intro. What I love about James approach to lyricism and BBTF in particular is his candour. Could it be about someone he knew or knows? There’s a lot to imagine.

Following on, and possibly a favourite already is Crystal Lake. Heavy, sludgy, doom rock at its finest, before it changes tack and becomes this seething behemoth of intensity (did it ever leave?) Brilliant.

Now I know that’s barely an overview so far, but with so many snippets to get through, you’ll have to go listen for yourself.

‘Side B’ equally brings the intensity and continues to show just what James does best. Though dubbed a metal project, like anything James creates, you hear elements of everything good, stoner, hard rock, progressive metal. Be prepared for anything at this point.

Kill Everybody is a solid snippet, groovy, yet heavy, very catchy. You can tell songs like this barely touches the side of ideas that James has, and I must say, makes for some great content.

I is a whirlwind of carefully curated noise that has emotion, depth and honesty. Not much more to ask for from James Castady-Kristament and I look forward to what’s to follow.

About Real Gods Are Blue

"Hi I’m James I’m a singer, songwriter, producer and multi instrumentalist. My past endeavours include the Hip Hop project JCK, the Goth Rock/Doom project Black Velvet Butterfly and the Grunge rock duo Dumb Dumb Head. All these catalogues are currently available on Spotify.

Real Gods Are Blue is my brand new Metal project.

I’m releasing what I call “micro mixes” a verse and a chorus about a minute long. Basically the gist of the song.

Shady Brain Farm - Album Review: ..Another Set Of Circumstances
26 Sep 2024 // by Kerry MB
Shady Brain Farm hail from North-West Auckland — specifically Kumeu, Waimauku, and Muriwai Beach — and has been making music together since 1997. The band, Ben Furniss lead vocals, guitar, and keyboards, Paul Taylor drums and backing vocals, and Chris Vaughan on bass and backing vocals are certainly no strangers to musical diversity and are back with a new album, ...

Hadees Drudge - Album Review: The Mind Lies When The Soul Dies

Hadees Drudge is quite an anomaly in Wellington’s metal scene. Forgoing a second guitarist, they proudly rock one guitar in a genre where that’s almost unheard of.

PARK RD - Album Review The Novel
23 May 2024 // by Kerry MB
It’s easy to see why Auckland five-piece, PARK RD is making some noise, figuratively and literally with their debut album, The Novel. Heavy on the indie, but far from light with solid guitar riffs and pop and funk sensibilities, PARK RD are a great example of solid musicianship.
