The Scavengers

Bio

The Scavengers were formed in Auckland during the pre-punk mid-70s. They were four graphic art students, bent on playing a brash form of street rock, and with a knack for ludicrously silly stage pseudonyms.

The Scavengers are best known for their punk nuggets 'Mysterex' and 'True Love' that featured on the punk compilation 'AK79'.

Between 1977 and 1978 the Scavengers regularly perfomed at Auckland punk club Zwins in Durham Lane, and The Windsor Castle in Parnell.

In mid 1978 they featured on a TVNZ documentary presented by the late Neil Roberts investigated the NZ punk scene. Later that year they rerecorded 'Mysterex' with former Ray Columbus and the Invaders guitarist Dave Russell, and produced a classic NZ video which is regularly played on national television.

Band Members:
Johnny Volume (guitar, vocals)
Des Truction (drums, vocals)

THE SCAVENGERS

New Zealand’s most famous/infamous seventies punks reform for one Auckland show.

The Rising Sun 373 K-Road Sat 13th November.

*Best known for their punk nuggets Mysterex and True Love that featured on NZ punk compilation AK79.
* Between 1977 and 1978 the Scavengers regularly performed at Auckland punk club Zwines in Durham Lane, and The Windsor Castle in Parnell.
*Mysterex , a song written about former lead vocalist Mike Lesbian was recently used on a Telstra/Karen Walker advert; and who can forget the infectious melody of True Love with the immortal opening line of ‘ I met her outside the IGA’.

It will be the first time the Scavengers have performed in New Zealand for 26 years since their departure for Australia in October 1978.
Originally forming in 1976 as a four piece while they were art students at Auckland Tech they dropped original singer Mike Lesbian, and trimmed to a trio in early 1978.

In mid 1978 they featured on a TVNZ documentary presented by the late Neil Roberts investigating ‘the New Zealand punk scene’. Later that year they rerecorded Mysterex with former Ray Columbus & The Invaders’ guitarist Dave Russell, and produced a classic New Zealand video which is regularly played on national television.

The Scavengers were –
JOHNNY VOLUME – GUITAR + VOCALS
DES TRUCTION – DRUMS + VOCALS
RONNIE RECENT – BASS + VOCALS

Ronnie Recent (real name Brendan Perry) is unable to make it back to New Zealand due to his commitments with Dead Can Dance (whom he formed in the mid eighties).
Playing bass will be Dion Palmer from the D4 for the night. The D4 covered the Scav’s Mysterex on their debut 6/20 album.

A collection of The Scavengers recordings from 1978 was released through Zerox records / FMR in 2003. Layout by Johnny Volume – now a graphic artist in Melbourne (as is Des), the CD and LP displays Johnny’s impressive personal collection of Scavengers ephemera.

Tickets from Real Groovy and Fast & Loose from October 12th
Doors @ 8-30pm
