The New Caledonia is a band that aims to provide an experience for the listener, where the music becomes a journey which creates worlds of atmosphere, colour and light.
Formed from the ashes of the rock band Stadium, which Fagan, Timon and Michael T played in, The New Caledonia has an altogether different approach. After the demise of the former band, Fagan, Timon and Michael M decided to explore music in a more creative and experimental direction.
Stepping out into relatively uncharted territory and following their instincts, they formed a concept and began writing material. The idea was to create a rock band that was bright and beautiful, but still charged with intense rhythm and energy. Stan was soon discovered and his creative drumming style easily fell into place with the band. A couple of months later Michael T joined; Michael having played with Fagan and Timon before was a natural choice on bass.
The resulting sound of The New Caledonia is a combination of styles and moods. Hypnotic and beautiful, angular and precise, with songs moving through sections that are powerful and rhythmically demanding, and then following on to spacious and smooth atmospheres. Songs often have a variety of different moods in them and have an epic feel, making the music almost a candidate for the “prog” label. But it is far removed from the indulgences of the never-ending solo that was a staple in earlier prog bands, instead the ego is sacrificed for the sake of the music.
Influences vary from rock and heavy/crazy rock to funk and psychedelia. The eastern approach to living is also a strong influence, and so much of The New Caledonia’s music can be said to be inspired by certain philosophies and ways of looking at life. Above all, the music is made for the enjoyment of the people in band, and the enjoyment of the audience during the live experience.
