Auckland based singer/songwriter Niki Ahu, originally from Hamilton, began her singing roots at church when she was aged eight. She has a unique style that mixes R’n’B and Hip Hop with an acoustic feel.
Niki has completed her second single 'When I Had You' with John Chong-Nee and Chris Chetland (from Kog). She recently received funding for the video and hopes to have this released soon.
Her career was launched when winning the sixth round of the 2003 Coke Rhythm Nation talent search after she released her first single, 'Nobody Knows'. This song scored the most votes among listeners of Mai FM 88.6. She was then featured along with other artists such as Goodshirt and Flow on Show in the 2004 music conference Resonate, where she collaborated with top UK producer Colin Emmanuel to re-produce 'Nobody Knows'.
Resonate also gave her the unforgettable experience of opening for UK singer Jamelia at her New Zealand showcase. Since then Niki has released her video for 'Nobody Knows'. This was filmed in her hometown Ngaruahia.
Niki was featured with other top New Zealand artists on a recent hip hop/dance national release - 'Wall Of Bass Technique'. On this album she collaborated with Flow on show and Mareko and was given a solo track from producers Baitercell and Schumacher. She is currently recording demos for her album and working towards completing this by early 2006. Niki is also working with John Chong-Nee and is appearing on his up and coming album, on a duet written by Chong-Nee. Her songs are amazing and tell stories that will relate to countless listeners.
She has a distinct voice and is about to be one of New Zealand’s R’n’B female icons. In spite of working with so many top artists and producers for the time she’s been in the music industry, she remains focussed and continues to be well grounded. Her songs captivate all age groups. Niki would like to establish herself in the NZ music industry and would welcome any interest from overseas. But for now she wants to continue to write songs that powerfully impact on her listeners. To use her music in a way where they feel they can self-reflect and transform how they see themselves.
