If you don’t yet you will soon. The Downlow, consisting of MC Loki and Slopemist, are set to hit the New Zealand hip hop market and blow it to bits with their innovative rhymes and rhythms when they release the Downlow Mixtape on April 14th, 2005.
But maybe you do know them or at least one half of them for Slopemist aka Chevy Rameka has a long history in hip hop, his father being Acid Dread from Upper Hutt Posse, an association which led to Slopemist performing on stage with Public Enemy at age 9, as well as appearing in New Zealand’s first hip hop video, E Tu, as a young rapper sitting on his Papa’s knee.
With this already vast musical background Slopemist met his partner in rhymes MC Loki in 2001 through graffiti. Loki too had an extensive history in hip hop and music, having attended the reputable MAINZ college and with both having similar tastes and beliefs, came together finding Zone 1 to produce the beats.
The beats are infused with reggae and take soul and jazz influences as well as a lean towards dancefloor destroyers and crunk. With a history in drum and bass, Zone 1’s unique production comes through on the electronic tip with a solid hip hop style.
Rhymes ranging from conscious themes to “get off your ass” words to inspire as well as party rhythms and dancefloor callers all feature, with special guest appearances by Maia, MC 4Higher and Tomb Raiders.
The album is the first release on the Disruptiv Music label, from the definitive hip hop company, Disruptiv Ltd., with radio and TV airplay planned for the release of the single on the 14th of April, entitled “Up In Here”. Speaking of the single title Loki says “It means you’re gonna find out all about us. We up in here. We’ve arrived”.
The latest release from the band is The Downlow Mixtape.
The Downlow has now disbanded.
