Black Chrome off to Europe

Palmerston North punk-rock band Black Chrome are heading to Europe in July for a two-week tour which includes 14 shows.

The band comprises Jimmy Snuff on bass guitar and vocals, Matt Sanko on drums and vocals and Wolfgang Blitzer on guitar and vocals.

Black Chrome has been playing together for nearly two years, but the members have played music much longer and have been in various other bands.

"We're not too much into politics, we're just about having fun and good times," said Snuff.

They believe they are the first Palmerston North band to tour Europe.

The band leaves on July 13 and arrive in Paris on July 14, Bastille Day.

Sanko said they are playing their gigs at night clubs and bars, with their first the night they arrive.

"We then travel to Belgium and the Netherlands playing several shows with one in Amsterdam. Next stop is Denmark with one show there, then on to Germany and Switzerland where we finish up and head back to Paris.

"We pretty much fly home straight away as we can't afford to loiter around."

The band members are paying for the trip out of their own pockets, as the money made as a band is going towards putting out an album later this year.

"If you want to go on tour overseas you don't instantly qualify for government funding. There's a long mapped-out process to follow if you want government assistance," Sanko said.

"We've just kind of skipped to step 10 according to the Government's scheme and are just off to do it. We're pretty much a DIY band."

The idea to go on tour started about half way through 2005 when the band members met a student at Massey who was from Germany and who liked their music.

"It's basically because of the university, people come to Palmy to study and they go on the internet to find local bands and music that they are into. We met a few people like that and the idea to tour pretty much snowballed from there, Sanko said.

If the European tour is a success the band members hope to repeat it, possibly with more shows. They also hope that other Palmerston North bands will do the same.

"When we get back we'll be working on recording our first album with a South Island tour later in the year. We also hope to get enough air points to go to Melbourne for a tour next year," Snuff said.

Black Chrome is playing at the Swampfest on May 15. It's an annual event to celebrate Palmerston North music.
