Tahuna Breaks

Bio

Tahuna Breaks have always encompassed a rich diversity of musical genres and styles. With seven members, the group has an appetite for continuously pushing boundaries in their live performance bringing a stage act that is energetic, tight and passionate to the audience.

Combining aspects of the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s Tahuna Breaks are influenced by artists as varied as James Brown to Daft Punk. Being unafraid to mix genres they have honed their live sound to encompass funk, disco, soul and roots focusing on addictive rhythms that get audiences moving.

The band has performed at The Big Day Out, Homegrown, Highlife NYE and many other major festivals in New Zealand and Australia, along with countless sell out national tours and one off performances.

Their 2007 debut album Reflections achieved rave reviews, followed in 2009 by album Black Brown & White that debuted at number 12 on the New Zealand Album chart.

After a four-year interval, Tahuna Breaks have entered the new decade with a fresh focus and a highly anticipated third major release. Shadow Light was produced under the guidance of UK producers ‘Crazy P’ and reflects the band’s progression and focus toward a more dance-orientated funk sound.

“There is no denying this band’s live musical energy” Amplifier.co.nz

“They have crafted an album pumped up with strong vocals, funk fuelled grooves and tight drumming” NZ Musician Magazine

“If the recording is anything to go by I bet these guys have a huge, and incredibly fun, live show.” Muzic.net.nz

“Funk, reggae and soul as good as i have ever danced to. Consistently up-tempo, fun and it showed they were enjoying themselves as much as the audience” Stuff.co.nz

Tahuna Breaks disbanded in May 2016.

Tahuna Breaks in Australia
Posted: Sat May 9, 2009 2:31 pm
Tahuna Breaks are pleased to announce that the first single 'Empower Me' from their upcoming second album "Black Brown and White" is available to download for free via the bands website www.tahunabreaks.com. The single is the first of many to come from the album that is due for release in August this year.

'Empower Me' by way of a general description fits best into the category of roots/rock/reggae with its decisive and militant tone; due in part to the solid, confident-bass heavy rhythm and punctuated by the 'pleaful' first person narrative of the vocal. This along with attacking horn lines evokes a feeling of determination in anticipation of meeting the great challenges that lie ahead in the 'game of life'.

Never a posse to take a break, May will see Tahuna Breaks leave their carpet clad Auckland warehouse to launch an assault on Australia playing seven shows in just 9 days.

Dates are as follows:

Thursday May 14th

The Sands Tavern - Marroochydore

Friday May 15th
The Step Inn - Brisbane

Saturday May 16th
The Del Plaza - Gold Coast

Sunday May 17th
Beach Hotel - Byron Bay

Thursday May 21st
The Steyne Hotel (Ivy's Room) - Manly

Friday May 22nd
The Empire Hotel Annadale - Sydney

Saturday May 23rd
The Oxford Tavern - Wollongong

The album 'Black Brown and White', due for release in August this year, was recorded in December 08 with the infamous Dr Lee Prebble at the Surgery Studio in Wellington. It is the follow up album to the bands first being 'Reflections' that was released in October 07.
