Bo and Bodhi’s debut album Subconscious Techniques, brings a “techy” edged sound to hip-hop, pushing tempos to breaking point and back. Subconscious Techniques delivers an electro/hiphop/breakbeat sound palette, with unpretentious lyrics delivered with a unique realness, sometimes playful, sometimes close to the bone and emotional. Drawing crisp tight drums similar to the Gorillas, “techy” synth licks like Roots Manuva, and a raw and original underground lyric/MC style like early The Streets tracks, this album has created something new that will surely stand out in any environment.
Bo and Bodhi hail from Golden Bay, a small thriving creative region in the top of the South Island. However, their first tracks were developed in Queenstown during the snowboarding season of 2004, and continued to grow throughout ‘05 and ‘06, with live performances during this time, in Queenstown, Christchurch, and Golden Bay.
The whole album was written, produced and recorded by the artists. Producer Bo Zwanikken (aka Max Tweaker), finished a diploma in Audio engineering through the SAE in Auckland, worked as an Audio Technician in Wellington, and has worked with live sound for a number of years. Music has always been his major passion. Bodhi Somersun (aka MC Bodhi) started out writing poetry, and only recently discovered just how fine the line is between writing poems and writing rhymes. So he set to work writing about real topics that are relevant to everyday life through his eyes. Together they have created this unique and original album.
