Black Seeds Groove The Altitude Posted: Sat Nov 15, 2008 2:00 pm Right, so I know it's delayed, but hey...a reviews a review. I saw these guys play in 07 at The Altitude in the mighty Tron and here's what went down... The last time I saw the Black Seeds play was at XAir in their hometown, Wellington. With a beautiful sunny afternoon in the capital to compete with, I wasn’t sure if the Altitude in Hamilton was quite the right venue for such a bright summery band. The shows I’ve previously been to there have always left me feeling deafer than a 90 year old grandma, so I was hoping for more music, less noise for the Seeds performance. We arrived early to get a good spot, and it was lucky we did! Seems the boys are more popular in The Tron than I thought. The bottom floor quickly filled, so upstairs was opened for more people – I’ve never seen this happen at the Altitude, so it was awesome to see they have such a great following here. On the floor up the front, there was pushing to get to the stage, but when the boys (finally) walked on one by one, the crowd was only worried about listening to their favourite Black Seeds tunes. The room was transformed into a beautiful Sunday afternoon with the first song of the evening, Lets Get Down, followed by Turn It Around off their album, On The Sun. By the time the third tune, Way The World was played all of my worries of turning into that 90 year old grandma again had disappeared…the music was clear with none of that nasty noise the venue is famous for. The instruments weren’t competing against one-another and each were played to Black Seeds perfection – right down to the tambourine. Other songs of the evening included The Answer, Prince of Wales, Fire, Cool Me Down and So True which were all performed with as much energy as the last. It was refreshing to finally see a live band that weren’t afraid to smile and have a good time, along with telling the crowd how much they appreciate the support. Concluding the evening with two top songs, Heavy Mono E and Sometimes Enough off their latest album Into The Dojo, the crowd went crazy. There was clapping, dancing and singing along much to the delight of the band and even the bouncer! They finished the show very politely with yet another thank-you before heading off stage into the sunset…(OK, the sunset part’s not true, but it fits!) By the comments of people leaving the show, a good time was had by all, and I’m happy to report that 90 year old grandma was no-where to be found afterwards. Amanda Ratcliffe |

New Black Seeds Album - Into The Dojo In Stores Today Posted: Mon Jul 17, 2006 10:27 am The Black Seeds are very pleased to announce the release of their highly anticipated third studio album Into The Dojo, released in stores today through Capitol Records. The recording of Into The Dojo began in May 2005, when band members Barnaby Weir (lead vocals/guitar), Daniel Weetman (percussion/vocals), Mike Fabulous (guitar), Bret McKenzie (keys), Lee Prebble (sound engineer) and new rhythm section Jarney Murphy (drums) and Tim Jaray (bass) once again converged on The Surgery studio in Newtown, Wellington. The next 12 months were spent balancing touring duties and side projects with writing and jamming new songs in the studio. The result of this year-long creative process is 13 tracks of The Black Seeds’ most mature and accomplished music to date. While Into The Dojo (named after the band’s practice room at The Surgery which was once a karate dojo) contains the elements that have characterised The Black Seeds’ music in the past, it also shows a great deal of development in the group’s sound. Song-writing responsibilities have been shared throughout the band’s members, while Daniel Weetman and Bret McKenzie have joined Barnaby Weir on vocal duties. The video for the first single Sometimes Enough is currently in production and is set for release in late July. The Black Seeds will complete a nationwide album release tour in August before completing a European tour in September and an Australian tour in November. |

Black Seeds News Posted: Thu Aug 19, 2004 8:15 pm The Black Seeds are pleased to announce the release of the new single and video clip from their Gold-selling album On The Sun. The third single 'Sort It Out' comes after of the success of singles 'Fire' and 'Turn It Around' which have both received significant airplay on NZ radio and TV. For their third video clip from the new album, The Black Seeds returned to local Fish n Clips director James Barr, who also directed the award-winning videos for 'Keep On Pushing' and 'Hey Son' from their debut album Keep On Pushing. The video was filmed over two days in the Wellington suburbs of Island Bay and Newtown. Stills from the making of the video can be viewed by visiting The Black Seeds' website (http://www.theblackseeds.com) Since its release and debut at #3 in the NZ album charts in February, The Black Seeds' acclaimed second album On The Sun has spent 16 weeks in the NZ Top 40 album charts and is approaching Platinum sales status in New Zealand. In March the band completed its most successful New Zealand tour to date with a sell-out, 11-show album release tour, and then returned across the Tasman in April for a second Australian tour. Highlights there included a packed house at the legendary Melbourne venue The Prince of Wales and a sell-out Sydney show. Another highlight in 2004 saw The Black Seeds travel to Singapore in late July to perform as one of the headline acts at the Rastafari Reggae Splash, Singapore's first ever reggae festival. The Black Seeds took their full, eight-piece live band over to perform to an audience of over 3000 people on Saturday 31st July. For more info check out www.rastafari.com.sg Later in 2004 The Black Seeds aim to be back on the road for New Zealand and Australian summer tours. |
