Debut Album for An Emerald City
Posted: Thu Feb 26, 2009 7:13 pm
Forming in late 2005, this New Zealand six-piece has created a sound that combines Eastern traditional instruments and psychedelic leanings with experimentation and musical liberation. Instrumental, thoughtful songs created by guitars, drums, sitars, violins, a Persian long -necked lute, tablas, daabuka, piano and percussion found from various reaches of the universe.

An Emerald City have gathered an excellent following in their home country and have spent much of late 2007 and 2008 playing shows, festivals and tours supporting the release of their debut self titled EP, which has received excellent reviews. Late 2008 and early 2009 has seen the band back on the festival circuit with legendary live shows throughout the South Island of New Zealand and a Big Day Out performance to over 5000 people.

The yet-to-be-titled debut album was recorded in early January 2009 in the isolated cave of Whatipu on the rugged West Coast of Auckland.

The first single ‘Mull Pasha’ (Mool Parsha) has already gone to alt radio to a great response and shows a powerful new direction for these experimental six.

Their first three songs from their EP went on to high rotate on New Zealand alternative radio, and all were Top 40 New Zealand radio singles, despite commercial radio not being involved at all. Their first song ‘Qing Song’ spent 12 weeks in New Zealand’s premier alternative radio stations top ten with four weeks at Number 1.

Having been one of the stand out local acts at Womad 2008, Big Day Out 2009 , Soundsplash, Canaan Downs and Rhythm & Vines, they are gaining a reputation as one of the country’s most exciting and refreshing live acts. The band relocate to Europe (Berlin) in May 2009.

News from An Emerald City...

Hello friends of An Emerald City, just to let you know on our myspace site we are offering you the chance to download Qing Song for free.. www.myspace.com/anemeraldcity

There is link to a place called music glue, basically it will take your email and put it in a database for us which is really helpful because then we can let you know when there are gigs coming, offer discount tickets to our friends, and special news about the band and the chance to be directly involved with us.

and in exchange, you get to download the song for free...
Also, the more activity we get (ie the more downloads) it gives us a chance to play at a band showcase next year in Brighton called the Great Escape.. which would be amazing...

Just to give you some news about what the band have been doing...
After a good long summer of shows 2007/08 and leading into shows into the winter months the band have been hiding away creating new music as we prepare to record our debut album this december in a secret special location, somewhere never used before to record an album.. the sound will be magnificent and the journey we make to get there will be treacherous.. but it shall all be worth it...

We plan to have the bones of the recording done by Christmas before we launch into playing Rhythm and Vines on the 30th of December, Canaan Downs festival Takaka on the 1st of January, and the Mussel Inn in Onekaka on January 3rd...

And we hope to see you somewhere along the line over January/ February as we will be playing lots of shows leading up to the release of our debut album in Feb/March..

April will see us go on an adventure... we will keep you well informed..

But please, go to our myspace, download the song, and let us be more directly involved with you if you like our music... thanks heaps for all the support,
An Emerald City
