Kommikal

Bio

Kommikal, also known as Kommi Knocker, is one half of the Christchurch electronic duo Rare Shot Blue. As a solo artist he is a bi-lingual (Māori/English) and defies description. His music covers so many styles and moods from his signature haka-based anthems to subtle laid back tunes as well as the odd space cadet freak-ballad.

Other than composing, recording and performing, Kommikal is an Audio Engineer, Producer, would be actor, occasional TV Presenter as well as a Programme Director for New Zealand's South Island Electronic/Roots/Reggae/Māori music station Tahu FM. His roots stem from Te-Ati-Awa, Ngāti Mutunga, Ngāti Tama and Kāi Tahu.

Kommikal's music is ever-evolving and transforming with songs exploring such themes as extraterrestrial invaders, messages for the lost and destitute, bold statements about world-wide indigenous struggle, political satire, advice to the greedy and rich, waterway and general environmental pollution, love/hate relationships and being cool.

Most of his songs are in Māori with many having an English version and a bilingual version for those culturally diverse people. He has several past released tracks such as the hard-hitting anthem ‘Tuturu’ off the Gifted & Maori RnB/Hip-hop compilation album, ‘Whiro’ from Gifted & Maori Volume 2 and the ‘Tēnei Te Ruru’ Reo Kāi Tahu RnB/Hip-hop compilation album as well as several other Māori and English tracks as well as many mixtape joints already independently released.

Kommikal is currently involved in the production of several music projects as well as an experimental laid back lounge music project for the grown and cultured folk. Other than Rare Shot Blue, he is also the lead vocalist/percussionist for the poetry/lounge music band Lamp & Couch and two electronic punk and ska bands The Aristocrats and The Cherry Tree Farmers. He has been a part of the whanau based acoustic comedy band Puha Crew since 1998.

In the past Kommikal has performed as supporting act for Busta Rhymes and he has shared the stage with other such artists as Hollie Smith, Taos, Tyna Keelan, Jay Roacher, Adam Whauwhau, Karizma, Mareko and The Deceptikonz.

Kommikal has always been a proud non-smoker and a strong advocate for the fight against British-American Tobacco New Zealand and any other groups like them.
