Deja Voodoo began as the fictional house band for the New Zealand show 'Back of the Y'.
The 15 seconds of mimed Rock n Roll these three posers produced at the start of each episode was enough to score them a nationwide orientation tour. But first they had to become a real band, so after a week of intensive song learning and writing the band were ready to roll.
Deja Voodoo weren't good but they weren't as bad as some had hoped. They bemused audiences from Dunedin to Auckland, the only saving grace being the finale where Matt smashed ten burning acoustic guitars over Chris' head. The tour was featured in the now legendary TV special 'Back of the Y goes to Hollywood' with the band supplying the entire soundtrack.
On returning from the tour the band hit its first obstacle when drummer Phil 'Spanners' Watson Bruff quit the band and left for the UK. He was replaced by Matt's girlfriend's little brother; James and they were off again. This time they were determined to become the best band in Auckland.
After several practises they realised that this was an impossible dream. They settled for not being the worst and celebrated by building a massive Deja Voodoo sign and playing five sold out gigs around Auckland. Things were looking up for Deja Voodoo, but tragedy struck again when Chris and Matt sold their TV show to MTV and decided to head off to the UK. Luckily London turned out to be a stinking shit hole and they were back with in six months.
On arrival in New Zealand they signed a four figure record deal with Liberation and went into the studio to record their first and possible last studio album. The ominously titled Brown Sabbath. It was to be a beer drinking concept album of epic proportions.
The first single from the album is a song that can be best described as an introduction to the band; it's called simply We are Deja Voodoo. A song as good as, We Are Deja Voodoo needs a kick arse couple of b-sides and amazingly The Voodoo have been able to supply them. The very scary Jack the Ripper (The Theme from 'Back of the Y') and a live number from a recent tour the sensitive ballad Feelings. These days Deja Voodoo claim to be New Zealand's premiere Grunge rock band and few would bother to argue with them.
Band Members:
Chris Stapp (bass, vocals)
Matt Heath (guitar, vocals)
Gerald Stuart (vocals)
Piers 'Wheels' Graham (drums)

New Deja Voodoo Song Available for Free Download Posted: Sat Mar 14, 2009 9:40 am Deja Voodoo and BFM are letting you lucky people download a NEW song from their upcoming album ‘The Shape Of Grunge to Come’ for FREE! Just go to www.backofthey.co.nz to be able to download ‘Grungewolf’ ………for FREE! ‘The Shape Of Grunge To Come’ can be considered as Deja Voodoo's alternative debut; a re-ignition of the hard rock/punk attitude and everyman accessibility that their peers from Seattle back in the day sweated out. A return to the band's proud and ancient roots. Sure, the lyrics are still “a bit shit”, but they are an honest expression of the everyday life that Deja Voodoo and their audience experience. And before some prick decides “joke band”, just remember that if history had allowed only bands who WEREN’T considered a joke by the cognoscienti to be heard, we’d only have cocktail jazz. ‘The Shape of Grunge to Come’ due for release in late May. Note: Free download requires signing up to the Back Of The Y website. |

The Brown Sabbath Tour Posted: Tue Jun 15, 2004 7:32 pm Featuring DEJA VOODOO, THE BLEEDERS and THE HAVE This July catch these three emerging Kiwi bands joined together for multiple nights of Rock’n’Roll Heaven! Deja Voodoo are establishing themselves as a group of serious musicians these days. Things have come a long way for the band since their beginnings as the fictional house band for the shit NZ show Back of the Y: Masterpiece Television. In 2003 they signed to Australasian record label Liberation Music and have succesfully released two singles, firstly the introductory 'We Are Deja Voodoo', soon followed by their epic beer drinking anthem geniuously titled 'Beers'. Their soon to be released 3rd single is the 'Can’t Help But Sing Slong' track 'Today, Tomorrow, Timaru'. They have supported kiwi friends Tim Finn, The D4 and Betchadupa and played the 2004 Big Day Out. This June will see Deja Voodoo release their debut album 'Brown Sabbath'. It is an album that has been in the making for 3 years which is pretty much as long as it has been due for release. 'Brown Sabbath” is most probably the longest-awaited album in NZ history, but let me tell you this, it’s well worth the wait. June 27th 2004: Deja Voodoo release their debut album 'Brown Sabbath'. In order to celebrate the album release in the most appropriate way it was decided the band would embark on a nationwide tour attempting to play every nook and cranny in this vast wasteland we like to call New Zealand. Deja Voodoo would require the assistance of two up and coming kiwi rock bands for support, The Bleeders and The Have. The Bleeders first merged together in late 2002 with the goal to bring something fresh to the NZ music scene. They quickly began to build a strong live reputation and soon went into the studio to record the 'A Bleeding Heart' EP. Two tracks off the EP 'All that Glitters' and 'A Bleeding Heart' have received extensive radio play throughout the country. To date The Bleeders have supported international acts Hot Water Music, The Ataris and The Hope Conspiracy as well as summer tour earlier this year with Blindspott and a performance at the 2004 Big Day Out. The band have recently released their second single 'All that Glitters', a song that has been playlisted to nationwide stations The Rock and Channel Z. Wanganui boys The Have formed in 2002 whilst still in high school. In just three months time they would go on to win the Coke Smokefree Rockquest and soon after be signed by interntional label Shock Records. Dec 2002 saw them release their first single 'Right on' and from there it’s been nonstop. They have also released another 2 singles since then 'The Fuzz' and 'What you Owe'. Earlier this year the band performed at the SXSW festival in Austin, Texas where they were labelled as the “buzz band” for the festival and their song 'What you Owe' was included on the official SXSW compilation. The Have has performed with musicians Jimmy Barnes (on his North Island tour of NZ), Pacifier and Grinspoon, and played at the 2003 Big Day Out. Late last May The Have released their 7 track self-titled mini-album and are currently in the USA playing gigs at world renowned venues.
