Mobile Stud Unit Celebrate 15 Years...By Breaking Up Posted: Thu Oct 9, 2008 8:49 pm Thanks to www.punkas.com for this: 2008 sees the 15th anniversary of the formation of MSU (or Mobile Stud Unit if you're not into the whole brevity thing). The Hamilton band may have become a little less prolific in recent times, but over the years have proven to be a stalwart of student radio nationwide. Meshing a punky, rocky sound with overtly joking lyrics, the band have churned out three albums over the years, even cropping up in Greg Page's film The Locals. To give you an idea, song titles include such charming ditties as "Grut Sniffer" and "Beef Curtains". So, what better way to celebrate 15 years together than to break up. Wait, what? Yes, 2008 will also see the last ever MSU gig, in their hometown of Hamilton of course. The show details are: Friday, November 14 - Altitude Bar, Hamilton 9pm $15 [R18] Support acts are yet to be confirmed, but the show will be door sales only, at a price of $15 a head. |

Mobile Stud Unit Celebrates Aluminum Anniversary Posted: Sun Sep 14, 2003 1:05 pm 2003 is the 10th anniversary of Hamilton band, the Mobile Stud Unit (MSU). And to celebrate, lead singer Rohan ‘Marxi’ Marx, plans to reunite the four current and seven previous members for the ‘Get a Jack Daniels and Cola Down Ya Holer MSU 10 Year Anniversary Bash’. The gig is to be held on Friday 10 October, 2003 at Digger’s Bar in Hamilton, with first acts kicking off around 9pm. Marx promises a full evening’s entertainment, including popular MSU classics as Bob, Little Fat Policeman, Stu’s Piecart and Beef Curtains to more recent favourites Salesman, and E. “Fans will be rewarded with a blockbuster chronological performance,” says Marx. “All original band members will reunite, play, then disband again in the same fashion as we have over the years. With 11 past and present band members and 3 distinct line ups it should prove to be the ultimate game of musical chairs.” The MSU is something of a Hamilton icon, achieving both a cult and legendary status amongst Waikato Alumni and further a field. Like them or hate them, upon seeing MSU for the first time one immediately senses that this is no ordinary band. Their garb is distasteful, their lyrics laced with heavy sardonic wit, their onstage antics and audience banter vibrant and captivating, their sound varied but predominantly driven by catchy punk riffs. MSU songs become instant classics, with the audience often singing along by the second chorus of a new song. “If you crossed the sound of the Sex Pistols with the lyrical sensibilities of Fred Dagg and Eminem, and threw in the costumes and onstage antics of the Wiggles you’ve pretty much got MSU.” Marx reckons. A major influence on the Hamilton music scene, MSU members also moonlight in other bands such as Nerve, Trucker, Rumpus Room, Uncle Stinky, Henry Peterson, Love and Violence, Readers Wives, the Hollow Grinders and Semi-detached Unit (Marx’s solo project). Supporting acts at the Friday October 10th gig will be some of the aforementioned splinter bands. The Datsuns have been offered the support slot, a position they have filled on many an occasion in prelude to their recent success but are yet to confirm or even reply. |
