When five South Auckland teenagers got together in 1998 to enter the YFC Capital Teen Convention band competition none of them had any clue that six years later they'd be playing in front of over 6,000 people at an event like Parachute 04, but such is the case with Mumsdollar.
The original five guys are now all out of their teens and look far more respectable than they did in the beginning and their music has followed a similar trend, moving from the fast punk rock beginnings to a more polished, rockier sound that has produced many catchy songs with kids around the country singing along.
In the year 2000 the group won the inaugural Gospel Eisteddfod which gave them the opportunity to play at the Sydney Olympics, as well as record and release their first album 'For Christ's Sake', a popular eleven song CD that went on to sell out before they released their next offering, 'Eastern Time' at Parachute 02. The year following would prove to be their most successful yet with their first #1 radio single on Life FM, 'The Wedding Song' and also headlining the inaugural Life FM Undergroundshow.com Tour which took them right around the North Island for the first time.
2003 though was definitely their year. Beginning at Parachute 03 with the most packed house the Cage had ever seen and then moving onto the Life FM Undergroundshow.com Tour 2003 that had them playing 15 shows right around the country from Orewa to Dunedin. At the same time 'One Day' was released to radio and made its way straight to #1 on Life FM, staying at that perch for three weeks. During this time 'Eastern Time' had sold out leaving the band with no current CD while they were only getting more and more popular.
Then came 2004 and of course the beginning at Parachute which saw them play in front of an insanely packed crowd of over 6,000 people in the Palladium and then a second show that filled the Cage past its capacity of 2,000. At this point 'Eastern Time' was re-released with new artwork and three bonus live tracks and is in stores now.

Mumsdollar - 'Ruins' Posted: Sat Oct 4, 2008 10:48 am 'Ruins' is the fifth independently released record from the five-piece rock act Mumsdollar. Hailing from South Auckland, Mumsdollar's music has become both more focused and more broadly appealing with each new release, culminating in the truly international sound of 'Ruins'. The band's previous album 'A Beautiful Life' (2005) was well received in New Zealand, Australia, the United States and Japan, with sales of more than 10,000 units. Mumsdollar toured extensively on the success of 'A Beautiful Life' - performing to crowds of over 10,000, both at home and abroad - and so it came as no surprise to their many fans that the album was a finalist at the 2006 New Zealand Music Awards. Having maintained a consistent line-up for nine years, Mumsdollar really are 'Brothers in Arms' (the title of the second 'Ruins' radio single) who have merged a wide array of rock, punk and pop influences to create a sonic landscape that is uniquely their own. Three years in the making, 'Ruins' successfully captures this unique sound, as well as the band's global outlook, with recording taking place at York Street Studios in Auckland, mixing at The Grove in Sydney and mastering at Masterdisk in New York. The first 'Ruins' radio single 'Sticks and Stones' (Kiwi Hit Disc 106, July 2008 ) features in the NZ Airplay and Rock Top 40 charts, with the accompanying music video being well received at television. The 'Brothers in Arms' radio single and music video will be released late 2008 - in conjunction with a nationwide tour - with plenty more radio singles to come. 'Ruins' has initially been released on CD as a specially packaged 'Deluxe Edition', with the distributor having completely sold out within one week and an urgent second pressing currently underway. The album is available for purchase at The CD & DVD Store, The Warehouse, JB Hi-Fi and independent retailers nationwide, as well as online at amplifier.co.nz, Digirama and iTunes. Mumsdollar are Steven Wood on bass and backing vocals, Peter Wood on guitar, Dave Barr on guitar and backing vocals, Ben Claxton on lead vocals and Tim Beale on Drums. www.mumsdollar.com www.myspace.com/mumsdollar |
