Most bands’ first experience of the European touring circuit involves a clapped out van and a handful of Wednesday night shows but then again, Evermore aren’t most bands. After supporting P!nk on her record-breaking Australian tour, she was so impressed by the band that her management specifically requested that Evermore join her on the European leg of her Funhouse juggernaut.
“Touring with P!nk has been great, playing in front of ten thousand people a night all over Europe has been amazing,” says vocalist and guitarist Jon Hume with typical ANZAC understatement. “This band has always been about the live experience and it’s great so many people are seeing what we’re all about.”
When the band – comprised of brothers Jon, Peter and Dann Hume (”some days you’d rather not spend 12 in a bus with your brothers, but you can’t always get what you want,” winks Jon) – first relocated from New Zealand to Australia, it became quickly evident what they were all about. Their 2004 debut, Dreams, introduced a young band with a preternatural grasp of pop melody and the ability to craft soulful, affecting songs. The plangent, yearning It’s Too Late (Ride On) from that record captured the listening public’s attention, spreading like wildfire across the Tasman and eventually all the way to the US, where the song featured on The O.C.
From there, 2006’s Real Life and this year’s Truth Of The World: Welcome To The Show have demonstrated that Evermore are one of the most exciting young bands around. All three albums have sold platinum, and the band have been nominated for numerous ARIA Awards and VNZMAs (winning two in 2007, for Best Single and International Achievement).
Now, they are proud to present Evermore to a whole new audience. A collection of the band’s best songs, it takes in the soaring heights of Can You Hear Me and Light Surrounding You, the aggressive groove of Between The Lines, the song that announced the band’s arrival, It’s Too Late (Ride On) – the record is more than just a “greatest hits”, it’s a narrative all of its own. To be able to track the growth of this remarkable band is a joy in itself; to do so accompanied by such strong songs doubly so.
Leading single Hey Boys And Girls is the perfect example of Evermore’s duality: what, at first, seems like a riotous stomp soon reveals, upon a more close listen, a scathing examination of what the Hume boys like to call the “trash media”. “It’s an upbeat party song that you can dance to, but with a bit of a twist,” explains Jon of the song that dismantles the celebrity media vortex and ‘infotainment’ industry. “We wrote it after watching late night TV, getting ideas from the strange shows and ads that come on in the wee hours of the morning.”
Plenty of artists would be content to end up with either captivating melodies or compelling lyrics, but Evermore locked themselves in their Melbourne studio for 18 months to find the perfect balance between the two. Such dedication is typical of both the band’s new material as well as the work that has seen Evermore make a name for themselves as one of Australian and New Zealand’s most respected and best-loved bands. After all, you don’t name yourself after a Led Zeppelin classic (The Battle Of Evermore) lightly.
As the band look forward into a new chapter, Jon Hume is excited to see what the future holds for Evermore. “It’s been a wild ride; all I can say is that nothing ever happens quite the way you expect it,” he says. “I’ve stopped having any expectations at all – just keep on moving forward and enjoying it. We want to travel far and wide, playing to whoever will listen. The night is young and so are we!”

Evermore Announces New Album Posted: Mon Feb 2, 2009 6:36 pm Evermore is pleased to announce its highly-anticipated third studio album, ‘Truth of the World: Welcome to the Show’, will be released in New Zealand on 23 March 2009. In the two-and-a-half years since the release of ‘Real Life’, Evermore has been busy touring, writing and recording. Jon, Peter and Dann Hume (aka Evermore) are pleased to announce their new album is almost ready for public ears. ‘Truth of the World: Welcome to the Show’ signals an exciting new musical direction for the band – an epic new sound and a further progression in songwriting clearly evident in their new single “Hey Boys and Girls”, which hits radio in Australia and New Zealand today. With huge consumer and industry recognition both here and across the ditch with two Vodafone NZ music Awards, the coveted APRA Silver Scroll award in 2005 for “It’s Too Late” plus six Aria nominations, and massive sales of 250,000+ albums, this is a band that is well and truly established and it’s now time to take it to the next level. Jon Hume from Evermore, said the following of the upcoming release: “I heard someone say that albums were dead... and everyone just wants three minute songs these days. That’s exactly what we are trying to fight with this record. We hit reset on what this band was about, threw everything out and just imagined the record we would want to hear someone else make. Something you could put on and not ever want to hit skip… one piece of music that ebbs and flows but never stops. It's a concept album that takes inspiration from trash entertainment, news headlines and political propaganda, and turns it into an over the top, fun, rock n’ roll show.” |

Evermore Sign To Sire In The US Posted: Sat Jun 25, 2005 2:35 pm Thanks to MedianStrip for the following: Evermore's debut album, Dreams, is expected to be released in the US later this year following reports that the band of brothers has signed with the Sire label. Having taken Australia by storm, with platinum sales and radio airplay galore (and let's face it, a rather more subdued reaction at home, where the album has yet to go gold), the Hume brothers recently played showcase gigs in the UK and US. Sire Records was formed way back in 1966 by Seymour Stein but really came to prominence in 1974 when the label picked up The Ramones, later merging with Warner Music and going on to help to launch the American careers of the likes of The Smiths, The Cure, The Cult, The Pretenders and other bands beginning with The. Evermore join a roster of current alt-rock stars like The Von Bondies, The Distillers, Hot Hot Heat, The Futureheads and, erm, Spongebob Squarepants. Evermore also recently signed a 'sponsorship' deal with Nokia Australia, the telecommunications company putting together a website featuring photos and video footage taken by the band using all the features of their fancy Nokia 3230 handsets. It's the first time Nokia Australia has ventured into local music sponsorship (yes, they consider are Evermore theirs). The company's Head of Marketing, Anthony Wilson, says they "couldn't pass up the opportunity of supporting and promoting some of the best talent currently on the Australian music scene." |

RE: Evermore take the Best New Artist award at the MTV Australia Awards!! Posted: Sat Mar 5, 2005 7:40 pm That is fantastic news! Evermore are one of my most favourite bands at the moment, I've been listening to 'Dreams' a lot. There's been NZ artist's that I have bought albums from, eg. Blinspott, Steriogram, P.money. But I was never really into them as much as I am into Evermore. They're definately one to keep an eye on, they are about to do big things...big things.. |

Triple J Adopts Evermore Posted: Sat Feb 5, 2005 4:15 pm Just to underline the fact that Evermore have been taken to the Australian bossom in a far bigger way than here in their own country, the Feilding brothers are the most prominent Kiwi representatives on this year's Triple J Hottest 100. The annual chart is voted for by the radio network's listeners and this year features two Evermore tracks, 'It's Too Late' (at #14) and 'For One Day' (at #57). The only other New Zealander to feature is Scribe whose 'Not Many (Remix)' came in at #35. The poll was topped by Franz Ferdinand's infectious 'Take Me Out'. |

Evermore News Posted: Wed Feb 19, 2003 5:48 pm Thanks to Evermore for the following... Slipping Away: It's the tune that captured the interest of Australian radio, the song that's inspired countless singalongs at EVERMORE gigs. Now, you can play your part in the EVERMORE success story by voting for 'Slipping Away' in Triple J's Net 50 countdown. We reckon we must be dangerously close to breaking into the charts so your vote could make all the difference! Come on, let's see how far up the charts we can get 'Slipping Away' to debut at! It literally only takes a minute and it's as easy as jumping on the web and heading to www.abc.net.au/triplej/net50/vote.htm. Exclusive MP3: EVERMORE like to look after their friends and that means you! It's been a while since the last newsletter and that's because things have been a little quiet as far as public appearances are concerned. The band have, however, been busy working on some demos over Christmas and thought you might want to have a listen to one song in particular. The song probably won't feature on any future releases so this is a definite exclusive to Battle subscribers! It's an acoustic demo of 'Sunshine' and you can listen to the song by visiting www.evermoreband.com/EVERMORE-Sunshine(AcousticDemo).mp3. Remember, this is an exclusive link and an exclusive song, and will only be available for a short time. Slipping Away Video: There's a new video currently doing the rounds for 'Slipping Away'. It was filmed over the summer at a number of the band's gigs and you can check it out on Rage, Channel V and MTV in Australia, and M2 and Juice TV in New Zealand. You can vote for the video by visiting any of the following sites: http://www.channelv.com.au/ http://www.abc.net.au/flytv/saturday/requests/default.htm http://www.music2.tv Evermore In America: America's a long way from the New Zealand countryside, but that's exactly where EVERMORE are heading! They're on the bill at the South By South West international music festival in Austin, Texas appearing at the Roxy Bar at 9pm on Friday Mar 14. For more info on the band's performance, and on the festival in general check out http://www.sxsw.com/music/showcases/index.php?id=5200. And why go all the way to America to play one show when you can embark on a proper tour? Stay tuned to The Battle newsletter for details of North American and Canadian tour dates in March. Australian Tour: There's no rest for the EVERMORE boys when they return from overseas. They'll head off on a national tour of Australia in April. If you caught the band with Brad in December 2002 no doubt you'll be keen to see them again. If not, you'll want to know what all the fuss is about! A one-off Sydney show is planned before the band depart for the US but you'll have to hang around for next week's newsletter for full details. Limited Edition Vinyl: If the Oil & Water EP isn't enough to keep you satisfied perhaps the limited edition 7" vinyl pressing of 'Slipping Away' will bring a smile to your face. You might be super lucky and find one in your local record store but as there are only 300 individually numbered copies in the world, it might prove difficult. You can order them on the website so get along to www.evermoreband.com. Website Update: Keep checking back for updates to the official site. You might notice now for instance, that it's had something of a facelift and now includes a guestbook. Comments are most definitely welcome! You can receive further Evermore updates by joining their mailing list on their website. Shade muzic.net.nz |
