Reviews

****1/2
“This is a gorgeous collection of pop songs, so bright and fresh you can
practically see them sparkle ... dizzying layers of guitars, keyboards and even a charango, this is simply a joy to listen to ... Pure pretty pop with passion.”
- Vicki Anderson, The PRESS. 25/01/2008

“I've been listening to these songs all night and I'm just in love with them -
they're literate, warm and jangly, which is everything that made Flying Nun bands so legendary back in the 80s.”

“Charming, melodic and upbeat pop that will bring sunshine to your ears.” - www.nzmusic.com

Minisnap features the songwriting skills of Kaye Woodward (vocals, guitar) along with fellow Bats, Paul Kean (bass, guitar) and Malcolm Grant (drums) plus Marcus Winstanley from The Undercurrents on guitar.

Minisnap has had a strong character since inception, evolving from a dark pop 2 piece with mostly looped rhythm tracks to a 3 piece with Malcolm over the 2 EPs ('In My Pocket' 2002 and 'March Hare' 2004, distributed online through SmokeCDs). Now, on their new album, 'Bounce Around', Minisnap
is a 4 piece.

'Bounce Around' was mostly recorded, mixed and mastered by Paul Kean at Pocket Music’s little home studio through a G5 iMac set up with a Digi 002 as interface to ProTools. A few essential extra good microphones were hired from Rob Mayes, at Failsafe.

“It's been a 2 year process since recording basic tracks through to the final mastering on the wonderful T-Racks tube emulation programme in October” says album producer, Paul. “It’s taken a bit longer than we planned because we keep getting distracted by other tempting projects. Over the last 2 years we have also:

· released 'The Bats at the National Grid' album.

· toured the USA to promote that album including performances at SXSW Austin Texas, New York, Boston, Houston, San Francisco and Los Angeles.

· recorded with The Archers (Hamish Kilgour and his partner Lisa Seigal along with Kaye and I). An EP will be released soonish.

· recorded 6 songs with Ladybird from France which form a chunk of their new album. (touring NZ in Jan/Feb 2008 )

· recorded 15 new tracks for the forthcoming 7th Bats album at John Kelcher's new National Grid studio in August 2007. We’re now doing overdubs and hope to have the album mixed and mastered by June 2008”

The artwork for Minisnap’s 'Bounce Around' is from a print by Michael Morley, (the Dead C) which he's kindly given us permission to use.

John Chrisstoffels has made a sweet little video for the brush beat New Broom. (see it on www.thebats.co.nz)

Rhythmethod are distributing the album in NZ and Australia and they have now added worldwide digital music store distribution as part of their service via www.amplifier.co.nz.

London indie label, Stolen Recordings, is releasing New Broom in the UK as a digital single along with the video. Minisnap is heading to Europe for a promotional tour in April 2008

Falling between the gaps.
Posted: Tue Jun 14, 2005 9:45 pm
I suppose I can start my own discussion and have a chat with one of my selves.
To begin ... on one side we have NZ on Air doing a wonderful job at supporting the commercial successes abundant aound our country at the moment. On the other side we have Creative NZ who dish out dosh to artists recording noises in tunnels, a chorus of lawnmowers or the deserving culturally significant groups of Aotearoa.
Falling between the gaps we find some fine music that has individuality and it will say to the world - "that sounds interesting - where did that come from?"
