Hip-hop group Sisters Underground are probably best known for their 1994 hit 'In The Neighbourhood'. The single spent 12 weeks in the Top 50 Singles Chart, peaking at Number 6, and has more recently been used on TV 2 advertisements. 'In The Neighbourhood' was produced by Alan Jansson, of OMC fame.
Since then, Sisters Underground has performed extensively in New Zealand, Australia, Indonesia, Italy, Sicily, USA and Hawaii and their music is released in the UK, New Caledonia, Australia, Belgium and France.
Presently Hassanah is temporarily based in New York while Brenda resides in South Auckland, and they commute between countries for performances and recordings.
In May 2003, Diesel, the US fashion label, released a song to help promote their label and chose one of Hassanah's new songs from her upcoming album. The resulting showcase for Hassanah was at the Hammerstein ballroom and 1200 people attended. She also recently supported De La Soul in NYC.
Sisters Underground have been described as two Polynesian Sades, with an urban sound, unique vocal style, and they combine the best of R&B, Jazz and Reggae effortlessly & or as Sekous Fancuois of the New York press sums Sisters Underground up: "Imagine Sarah (Vaughan) and Ella (Fitzgerald) opening up for a Bob Marley concert on a hillside in Jamaica. That's how you feel listening to these girls singing ... pure beauty".
