Auckland's Garageland made a big splash with their debut record 'Come Back Special' on Flying Nun in August 1995.
The bFM favourites came out with five fresh pop songs that suggested a new wave of musicians were clutching the classic Flying Nun catalogue for inspiration and taking off to the garage to jam.
With their guitars turned up to warm reverb and tossing off words not just with the lazy abandon so favoured by the modern American underground but in the way that great NZ bands have always mumbled their way through a catchy tune, Garageland are mining a rich musical vein.
Garageland started out two years ago playing on the fringes of the Auckland scene and posting tapes of their songs to student radio stations around NZ.
They watched incredulously as these songs strode up the radio charts and bands came up to them and said "Support us". Next thing they're writing letters to Flying Nun with "Garageland - undoubtedly the world's greatest guitar band" typed along the top.
The label's staff, already tuned into the music, found the thought of making another band look like fools as they attempt to live up to their self-created hype too good to ignore and Garageland were signed.
So Garageland rode the back of their great 'Come Back Special' debut with a tour of NZ and a visit to Australia with King Loser and Loves Ugly Children, where they went down a hit but had their best guitar stolen by some unfriendly bastard in Sydney. Undaunted Garageland went off and wrote a pile of new songs.
In 1999 Garageland released their second album, 'Do What You Want' after completing a successful tour of the US, UK and Aussie.
2001 sees the release of their third album, 'Scorpio Righting', and rumour has it that they are currently working on their forth album.
Jeremy Eade now fronts a new band, titled Black Drum.
Band Members:
Jeremy Eade (vocals, guitar)

Garageland Escape Killer Tornado! Posted: Tue Nov 19, 2002 7:41 pm Jeremy Eade and Dave Goodison from Garageland continue to showcase and schmooze their way through the US to promote the Scorpio Righting LP there. And Dave has been checking in regularly to keep us up to date: "It's just been a whirlwind. Literally. The day after we drove through Ohio 70 tornados killed 34 people! And I thought New York was dangerous! As for that, watch out Auckland, after driving in NYC and taking on the cabbies AND WINNING, I'm going to be nightmare on the roads when I get back. We played at the Uncommon Ground in Chicago, which is a fantastic coffee house venue with a great clientele. Jeff Buckley used to play there and they hold an annual tribute show with artists from around the world attending. We were invited to be a part of it but our schedule didn't allow it, oh well. "Visited Chess records here as well as a couple of blues clubs and the amazing Field Museum of Chicago. Back in Seattle and onto the home stretch though now." Shade muzic.net.nz |

Garageland-ers Feeling The Hippy Thing Posted: Fri Oct 25, 2002 4:29 pm Thanks to Median Strip for this story: Garageland (or part of) embark on a series of 'tasteful acoustic showcases' in the US this week ahead of the release of Scorpio Righting there. Jeremy Eade and Dave Goodison are lined up for 16 gigs. Dave reports from the road: "We're hangin' in San Fran right now, in between shows. Did a walking tour of the Haight-Ashbury district yesterday to get a feel for the whole hippy thing... it's more like Ponsonby Road now though. We're actually here on the 35th anniversary of the Summer of Love, and today there's a big free concert with the likes of Love, Big Brother Holding Company, Country Joe Fish and Canned Heat playing, so I guess that's art for today." "The Phoenix Hotel we're staying at has it's own night club, so it's been pretty difficult to sleep the last couple of nights, so a nice cruisy day in the park sounds good!" Shade muzic.net.nz |
