After ripping the tendons off his middle finger while playing out a rugby contract in Scotland, Wax ventured to the South of France to drown his sorrows. Inspired by the buskers and artists throughout the region, he drunkenly phoned his cousin Fiz, an industrious plumber back home in New Zealand, and asked whether he would be keen to have a crack at some original music.
"Yeah. Yeah I would," Fiz replied.
As Fiz began toying with some early riffs, Wax put pen to pad in the Scottish Borders. Upon his arrival back in New Zealand, local bridging manager Anton Dickens and lawyer Elliott Mitchell would form the final two pieces of the jigsaw.
Juggling fulltime jobs, and with no formal musical training, The Sparrow Thieves spent the next few months in a room in Ant's house known only as 'The Nest,' writing the songs that would make up their debut EP.
Come mid-April 2013, the Thieves entered Little Fire Studio in Invercargill, recording and mixing the products of The Nest. ‘The Sparrow Thieves EP’ was released on 14th June 2013.
The Sparrow Thieves are an Invercargill-based band, writing and performing their own music. Influences have been drawn from the likes of Jack White/The White Stripes, Kings of Leon, Pink Floyd and many others.
