William Philipson

Bio

William Philipson is a composer and music editor based in Wellington, New Zealand. In the past, he has forced primarily on writing for film. He composed the score for the 2021 feature documentary High Tide Don't Hide which followed the school strike for climate in New Zealand. This film played across cinemas in New Zealand as part of the 2021 Doc Edge Film Festival, before it headed to the prestigious Hawai‘i International Film Festival. The film was then shown on TVNZ in New Zealand and PBS in the United States. The film was also shown in New Zealand parliament in a special event hosted by politician Chloë Swarbrick the day after a climate emergency was declared. He also worked as a composer on the 2020 horror-comedy film DEAD (along with Tom McLeod, and James Euringer). This feature film was released on September 17th to a nation-wide cinema release, and can now be watched on TVNZ.

Philipson's other credits include composing music for the short documentaries Mawhialeo Ote Alowha, and Our Money, the short films, Follow the Light, Blood Tropicana, and Woman In Blue (co-composed with Tom McLeod), along with numerous other projects. As a music editor he worked on the TVNZ crime drama One Lane Bridge, which he also wrote additional music for, as well as the feature documentary Helen Kelly - Together. He has also worked as a music editor for the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra.

In 2022, Philipson received the prestigious APRA Professional Development Award. In 2022 he was also invited by Chamber Music New Zealand as one of three composer to take part in their Composer Woodshed program. He is also a committee member and secretary of the Screen Music & Sound Guild of New Zealand, where he advocates for young and emerging composers to help create clear and accessible career pathways into the screen industry.

Philipson holds a Masters of Fine Arts (CP) in film scoring as well as a BA majoring in film and music from Te Koki New Zealand School of Music at Victoria University of Wellington, wherein 2017 he was awarded the Susan Rhind Award in Composition.
