The Chicago Jazzmen

Bio

Barry Nielson's Chicago Jazzmen have been playing around Auckland since 1985 and the band's members have been described as "life's characters" which according to the band leader is just another euphemistic way of saying "bunch of old farts".

They play basically trad & dixieland style but anything goes as long as its's musical (the line was drawn at punk music 'cos the requisite safety-pin thru the nose apparently interferes with one's embrouchre, - whether or not punk is actually music is another story)

The trio line-up of Barry on banjo, Andy Massie on reeds and John Keatley on tuba had been together since 1997 with Don Bruce on trumpet, Bob Ward or Danny Allen on trombone and Tony Parker or Gordon Marr on drums whenever it was possible. In 2004 Barry disappeard into the wilderness that is Manawatu and now Colin Crook is the banjo-owner of the Chicago Jazzmen.
