Kelvin Roy

Bio

Kelvin Roy hails from Everywhere USA where he developed as a performing artist with Motown soul and jazz bands.

Born in Michigan, he was classically trained on piano and brass. Later he toured the midwest with popular funk and R&B groups.

There was early experimentation in writing which developed as he wrote collectively and arranged music for the groups he performed with.

After moving to south Louisiana he immersed himself in the melting pot of styles building his interest in jazz, mixing this with country music, southern rock, and RnB. This contributed to his unique melodic voice.

Several years on, a move to Los Angeles and a return to jazz and soul musical roots saw him work with artists like Matt Catingub and Brenton Woods.

With the desire to write popular songs from the ground up, he moved to New Zealand to discover a part of his heritage, in having a NZ-born father.

Since then, he has founded successful NZ groups as diverse as The Jews Brothers Band, and his current band, BlueStars.

As a composer, the songs began to flower in the New Zealand environment - first through his Gyrotayshin band which released an album on Ode Records. Then he started the Martian Music label, which has released four CDs to date.

These releases cover jazz in all its diversity - from the atmospheric to the smooth to the jazzy mainstream. It's vocal music that features unique use of horns like the bass trumpet.

The song 'Be Strong' from 'Inner Space' achieved some radioplay, then the 'Just Can't Stop' CD saw his music get increased airplay on pop radio. 'Just Can't Stop' also appeared on the NZ on Air Kiwi Hit Disc #33. In 1999, he released his millennium tribute song - 'Times of our Lives'. This song has been played on American and NZ adult contemporary radio stations. He has attended trade fairs like MIDEM and many have observed the jazz influences in his work. He has worked with Janice Pendarvis (of Sting fame) and his songs have been plugged to artists like Celine Dion.

In early 2001, Kelvin Roy & BlueStars - Around the World of Music Live at the Loaded Hog was released. His live jazz artistry is well represented on this CD. That's Entertainment!

In 2002, Kelvin Roy relocated to South Australia to spread the good word further around the world of music. He was also contracted as a songwriter by Boa Records in Canada. A new CD release, "Life as we know it", is due for release in mid-2002.
