Rachel Dawick

Bio

2010 has seen Rachel Dawick emerge as an established songwriter with two collaborative songs being released in August ('Somewhere to Jump' Aberfeldy) and in September by EMI in Greece and the UK ('Peeling Apples' Athena Andreadis) and the completion of her MA in Songwriting at Bathspa University.

Originally from New Zealand Rachel has spent the last nine years playing at festivals and clubs across NZ and the UK originally as part of an all female blues/celtic trio Ruby Blue and in the UK as a solo artist sometimes working as a duo with the fabulous Nick Lewis and as a band with Roy Dodds, Kevin McGuire, Andy May and Nick Lewis for her recent album and with Pat McGarvey and Wil Molleson at the launch in Edinburgh in August 2009.

The most recent album 'Ed's Bar and Grill' released at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in August 2009 saw a move from the more reflective and worldly folk influenced album 'Journeys' released in 2008, to a definite country groove that is "a bit bluesy, a bit western swing, a bit Marlene Dietrich" with songs that have a "world-weary feeling to them - as if they were recorded in black and white" (Bluesbunny Review 2009).

The last six years in the UK has seen her maturing as a songwriter and as a performer with two solo albums released and the recent completion of her MA Songwriting at Bathspa University in 2010. Her third solo album 'Picking at the Bones' is due to be released in her home country NZ in February 2011 and is the accumulation of songs written over 2009 to 2010.

November 2010 sees her first solo music tour through NZ for five months followed by a tour through Europe and the States in Spring and Autumn of 2011. For these tours she will be joined on stage by some fabulous artists and there are some exciting projects on the horizon that will be revealed later.

With a voice that tosses between the grit of Mary Gauthier, the lilt of Joan Baez and the depth of Natalie Merchant and songs that cut straight to the bone this will be one artist to look out for near you.

Rachel has performed in a variety of places/events including: Christchurch Folk Club (NZ), Whare Flat Festival (NZ), Canterbury Folk Festival (NZ), The Harbourlight Theatre (NZ), The Golden Guitar Awards (NZ), Micky Finns (NZ), The Edinburgh Festival Fringe (Acoustic Music Centre), Acoustic Music Club Kirkcaldy, Edinburgh Folk Club, Glenfarg Folk Club, The Wee Folk Club, The Leith Folk Club The Star Folk Club, the Cambridge Folk Club, the York Folk Club, The York Folk Festival, The Taybank Songwriters Festival, The Edinburgh Songwriters Festival, the Dunfermline Folk Club, The George Hotel, The Early Music Centre in York, The Chapel Arts Centre in Bath, The Folk House in Bristol as well as an array of other places including the slightly more unusual ones such as the York Football Club as the half time entertainment!
