This high energy alt-folk group has been pieced together over two years - writing and performing together around their hometown of Auckland, New Zealand.
Drawing inspiration from artists like Lianne La Havas, Lake Street Dive, and Alabama Shakes, their melodic hooks are clean and catchy from first listen, but the carefully crafted layers of electric guitar, trumpet, and double bass give their sound an inventiveness which plays wild or subdued in equal measure. Lyrically, the style varies between the poetic, fiery disdain, and candid melancholy. There are stories of serious hits to the heart and head, but the overall tone of adventure and of growing up prevails.
The now five-piece band, began as a duo when songwriters Elizabeth Cameron (vocals/ melodica) and Lane Twigden (vocals /guitar) were put in touch on a musical blind date. Cameron, having spent the past three years writing and performing foot-stomping Americana music with expats in South Korea, returned home ready to head in a new musical direction. Initially, their joint songwriting was the meeting point between this and Twigden’s dreamy acoustic folk style. The transition to electric guitar and the introduction of a full band, brought in Raj Bakker (drums), Tim Shacklock (double bass), and Guy Harrison (trumpet) to round out their unique set up.
