Emma is a soon to be graduate from Massey University with a Bachelor of Commercial Music, majored in practice. She has been involved in music and performance for as long as she can remember, and has experience in a wide range of skills, including solo and group singing, mentoring and working public arts events. While she has primarily worked with bands, she has now gone on to focus primarily on her solo work under the name Emma Rose. Her music includes flavours from multiple different genres, her most common being experimental and indie-rock. She is currently working on her debut EP Elderflower.
Elderflower is a collection of songs which cover themes ranging from abuse to the loss of personal identity. Emma likes to use the juxtaposition of upbeat music matched with challenging subject matter to create intrigue, stating that “maybe if we use happy sounding music to bring up hard conversational topics, it will make it easier for people to open up and talk about it.” Her single ‘Happy’ is the epitome of said juxtaposition. The song is about being in an unhappy relationship with someone who is emotionally abusive, but being too reliant on them to end it. Emma chose ‘Happy’ to be her single as it was the only collaborative song written for the EP, and a song that really spoke to her personally.
Emma’s goal is to eventually release a full-length album and tour nationally.
