The story of Steriogram begins in New Zealand's North Island, June of 1999. Brad and Jake, longtime friends from a tiny town called Whangarei meet up with Tim and Tyson who have been friends for years in Auckland, and they start playing shows around the area as a melodic rock four-piece. Making a name for themselves with a manic live show they quickly start to build a loyal local following.
They start touring, booking and organising everything themselves while devoting less and less time to day jobs. Meanwhile the sound is developing as Tyson starts bringing his rap vocals into the mix. Realising the need for a full-time drummer, they enlist mutual friend Jared who actually OWNS a drumkit.
The band releases the song White Trash in August 2001 on their own label, Sumo Music and shoots the White Trash video on a shoestring budget and a whole lot of favours. The song brings in airplay on various local and nationwide NZ radio stations as well as a good amount of Music Television play.
By early 2002 everyone has either lost their day jobs or is about to, so they put their heads down and tour every corner of New Zealand in a tour of High Schools, Universities, and Pubs.
After sleeping on floors in random houses throughout New Zealand, the band rents a beach house and writes and records a batch of new music, resulting in a bunch of new demos and many irate phone calls from the neighbours.
They are contacted out of the blue by a U.S-based freelance A R scout, who managed to get substantial label interest with a handful of the new demos and a home-edited video of a live show. The band signed with Capitol Records in November 2002 and flew out to Los Angeles shortly after to meet with producers and managers.
They spend January back home in the NZ summer writing more new material for the album, returning to the States in February to begin recording their debut album with Producer David Kahne. Many late nights and cases of Red Bull later they emerged with the 12 tracks of Schmack!
Jared now performs with Dead Favours.
Band Members:
Brad Carter (vocals, guitar)
Tyson Kennedy (vocals)
Jake Adams (bass)
Tim Youngson (guitar)
Jared Wrennall (drums, vocals)

Tyson double Posted: Tue Mar 1, 2005 4:27 am Saw Tyson on "Never mind the Buzzcocks" on UK TV last night. Was stunned as I thought it was my son! They could have been separated at birth, if Ty was born in Blighty! Does this mean my son can forge a new career as a lokky-likey?! |

RE: First New Zealand Band To Be Up For A Grammy Posted: Sun Dec 12, 2004 4:17 pm yeah, that video is pretty amazing, though it should be, seeing that it cost about $400, 000 or whatever. What's a Short Form Music Video? |

Apple's Golden Boys? Posted: Thu Nov 4, 2004 11:53 am Apple uses Walkie Talkie man for the iPod ads but what many people may not know is that they use them for more than that. I was at the Apple Update in Wellington a couple of months ago and they did a big presentation video of Apple's porducts like Motion, Logic, Final Cut Pro/Express and who was the backing track for the video? Yep, Steriogram and their hit Walkie Talkie man. But get this. A few months ago Apple had their WorldWide Developer Conference (WWDC) in San Fransico. A similar video was made for iTunes/iTunes Music Store, iPod and a couple of other audio related stuff and once again Walkie Talkie man was used. Talk about huge exposure when your song is being heard by thousands of people from all over the world in one place. Way to go Steriogram. |

Steriogram video in amongst the heavyweights Posted: Mon Jul 5, 2004 8:11 pm Steriogram's 'Walkie-Talkie Man' video was nominated for the 'Best International Video for a Group' award at the Much Music Awards held in Toronto. The video was directed by Michael Gondry who recently directed the film 'Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind'. In the end, Outkast won with the 'Hey Ya' video, but still, Steriogram were alongside some heavyweights, such as the Beastie Boys, Black Eyed Peas, Evanescence, Good Charlotte, and the Darkness. Nice. |

Steriogram so far in four weeks has driven 8000 miles in the new GMC van and has opened up for Sum 41, Smile Empty Soul, Alkaline Trio, Collective Soul, Wakefield, Saliva and many more bands. The crowd responses have been just awesome with the website going absolutely ballistic. The album is due out in February 04 and is untitled at this time it has 11 tracks and for the NZ fans features a new version of White Trash. Some of the song titles include Road Trip, Tsunami, On and On, Go and Be good to me. Steriogram just played at a huge festival in Pittsburgh PA with Blink 182, 311 and Def Leppard and are now off on a tour of Canada with American Hi Fi. So you know the band will be on tour right up until the release of the record and way way after... Brad got to meet the drummer from def leppard with one arm... He is a serious drum master! plays the snare with his left foot! Steriogram has put together a wicked Sampler CD titled Sweet as for you, that has two album tracks and three b-sides, it also includes a DVD with some of the antics that the boys have been up to this year recording the record. If you are interested in getting a copy and joining our street or e-teams make sure you reply with your Name, Address, Email, Phone number, and a few sentences explaining how you could promote Steriogram and the new album amongst your mates, schools, work etc... we will be in touch with you in the next 4-5 weeks. Thank you for all the amazing emails of support and encouragement we get... you guys are the best!!! |

Steriogram Land Capitol Amercia Deal Posted: Tue Nov 19, 2002 7:38 pm The Datsuns did it in the UK. Now Steriogram have done the same, this time in the US - jumping into the international fast lane and signing direct to a major label, Capitol Records America. The Auckland five-piece head to the US next week to meet producers, planning to be in the studio by January for a debut album release in North America in mid-2003. Capitol, part of the EMI Group, is one of the industry's best-known and most-respected names, responsible for a host of big names from The Vines to Coldplay, Robbie Williams to Radiohead. Now add Steriogram. The initial contact arose when independent label manager Joe Berman saw the band's website, what they had been up to this year and the video for White Trash, says guitarist Brad Carter. "He emailed us and we built up a consultant-type relationship with him. He remixed some of our songs and made up a sampler CD and a video with some live footage. Soon we had a few major labels wanting to fly us over to play for them, but Joe kept getting interest and calls from other labels who'd heard of Steriogram so he made us wait. "Then out of the blue late in October our video found its way onto Andy Slater's desk. He watched it, called in his Head of A&R and said 'I want this band by the end of today!'" They inked the deal on November 1. Since signing, the band has kept the news - momentous in New Zealand music terms - remarkably quiet. They plan to announce full details shortly Shade muzic.net.nz |
