The first incarnation of Debris was formed around 1995 in Christchurch, mainly as an outlet for Aman Pilgrim's songs that were not getting an airing in his other group, The Teen Angels. Pilgrim started jamming with good friends James Guthrie (also playing in Cinematic at the time) and Greg Hirtzel (Atomic Blossom) to join him in contesting that years Southern Battle of The Bands (their first live outing in fact, where they qualified for the regional final -- Atomic Blossom and Snort were the eventual winners, I think).
Hirtzel left the band in 1995 when the Blossoms moved to Miami (and then New York), and Pilgrim recruited Whetham Allpress out of local hip-hop-rock act NilState. Despite the stability of this line-up, the actual workings of the band are fairly chaotic - not since 1997 have all the boys lived in the same city at the same time. Presently, two are in London, and the last in Wellington, but, over the last four years they have variously moved around Christchurch, Auckland, Hamilton and China.
Such wanderlust has not dampened the recorded output of the band, and they have released an EP or album every year since their inception. Early output was punky-pop in the vein of Loves Ugly Children, Nirvana and Sebadoh, and they've evolved over the last couple of years into a tight, noizy rock band who are most often compared to Sonic Youth, Pavement and Dinosaur Jr.
