Seclusion

Bio

South Auckland post-alternative band Seclusion knows all about change. Seclusion began in early 2002 as a 3-piece, with vocalist Michael being the founding member.

The early Seclusion sound was a generic one, with the band trying to establish its own unique flavour in the rock scene. With the addition of Nick on lead guitar in mid-2003 its sound had developed to a new level, with Nick bringing a hook-filled, grunge-infused vibe to the band. Then in early 2004, the original bassist was replaced by Shawn, a fan of hardcore, metalcore and all things heavy.

The final stage of evolution came in late 2004 when Quinton joined its ranks, taking over from the original drummer who left to pursue another career. The final product is a sound that listeners and critics alike will find hard to compartmentalise easily…

Seclusion certainly are no ordinary band. Its members hail from such diverse musical persuasions as Heaven Shall Burn and Killswitch Engage, Blink 182 and New Found Glory, Fuel and A Perfect Circle, and Jay-Z and Counting Crows. These varied musical influences come through in their music, with tracks such as the crushing brutality of Cold Comfort, the ambient serenity of Immune, raw punch of Lose Control, catchy groove of Beautiful and Remembah, and the fast-paced intensity of Programmed and Empty Inside. While the band’s sound may have well and truly been consolidated, as the band matures, however, a further metamorphosis of its already eclectic musical renderings cannot be ruled out.

Determined not to be just any clichéd garage band that jams for fun and the hell of it, the members of the band have set themselves personal and collective goals. Thus far, Seclusion has reached the regional finals of the Battle of the Bands two years in a row since first entering the competition in 2003. The band has gigged at a number of locations Auckland-wide, including the Masonic, Crook and Flail, The Roadhouse, All Nations Tavern and Lincoln Green, just to name a few. At present it has penned 15 originals, with another 5 songs in the making. And having just recorded and released its debut EP 'Other: Please Specify', the band is setting its sights on the bigger picture. Among its goals is to be touring nationwide by the end of 2006. The band has a number of gigs lined up during the next 3 months of 2005 and plans to gig more extensively henceforth.

Perhaps the term ‘post-alternative’ does not do justice to the sound of Seclusion, whose style comprises – and blends – elements of grunge, alternative, hard rock, nu-metal, rap, emo, hardcore and prog rock. While it may prove difficult to place Seclusion in any definitive genre, there certainly is a common thread running through its musical style: crunching chords and sonic intensity coupled with emotive vibe and tranquil melodies.

Seclusion are now based in Sydney.
