Tourist

Bio

Tourist arise from Auckland. Playing distinctively original songs, the band has defined a brave new sound unique for this part of the world. Their rare ability to intertwine infectious melodic subtleties and stadium-ready anthems demonstrate a group well beyond their years. The quartet featuring Peter J Rudd (vocals, guitar) Rob Ranger (bass, vocals) Scott Gamble (guitar) and Simon de Vere (drums), have their debut album titled ‘Minutes Last For Years’. This record will become the hypnotic soundtrack people can’t shake from their minds.

The album was recorded at Stir Studios, in the cold wet streets of Cardiff, Wales and at York Street Studios, amongst the warm wet streets of Auckland. ‘Minutes Last For Years’ was produced by award winning UK producer Greg Haver who has worked with international artists such as Manic Street Preachers, Catatonia, Super Furry Animals, Mel C and New Zealand acts The Feelers and Pluto. The resulting sound of this recording is one that is intense and exciting, yet at the same time openly accessible and honest. Peter J Rudd’s unmistakable voice, infectious melodies and thoughtful lyrics atop surging guitars and raunchy, pulsating rhythm section that together forge a masterfully structured debut album of colossal rock songs brimming with classic britpop style and distinct indie flare. Rip It Up magazine recently reviewing the band’s last EP release noted “Tourist are a fresh New Zealand band that I have confidence in getting very big because they are so original.”

Tourist are regular performers around New Zealand and have played internationally alongside artists such as Gramsci, 48 May, Zillionaire, Goodnight Nurse, Heavy Jones Trio, Midwest Motorparts Corral, The Septembers, Leonard and The Fanatics to name a few.

The band has a number of plans this year including the release of their debut full length studio album ‘Minutes Last For Years’ and touring New Zealand and overseas. Keep a lookout for Tourist’s highly anticipated debut soon to be released…

Posted: Fri Nov 10, 2006 9:59 am
This just in from Tourist:

We are pleased to announce the new album 'Minutes Last For Years' is out now!

Thanks to all those that made it along to the release show at the Kings Arms - we appreciate your support.

The record is available in good record stores and online now (see link below). To celebrate we are playing live tonight at Real Groovy Record, Queen Street from 6pm. 'Minutes Last For Years' has been receiving good reviews in the media both here and overseas....

"Tourist formed in late 2000 and while not yet a household name, seem poised on the brink of Indie-rock greatness. The impressive debut album a fresh collection of British tinged rock songs."

Natasha Francois, NEW ZEALAND MUSICIAN

"With their impressive debut album Minutes Last For Years, recorded in Cardiff by a producer who has worked with some of the biggest names in the British rock scene; their publishing held by an American company; and interest from Europe-they seem to be doing something very right. One listen to their powerful album-launched at the Kings Arms this October-and it is easy to hear how they could be accepted by both Indie-rock and mainstream audiences."

Graham Reid, VIEW AUCKLAND

"Hard working Auckland rock band Tourist have released their debut album Minutes Last for Years. A highly polished rock outing for a band destined for great things. Mature melodies and harmonies meld together on these anthems creating a cerebral experience as well as a toe tapping one! Recorded both here in NZ and in Wales, Minutes Last for Years is a well sculpted album. Well worth a peek."

NZ MUSIC

"The best way to describe their sound is to take one dose of U2 (the early era), mix it with Manic Street Preachers and add a touch of that typical 'down under' sound of Aussie rock. There's a certain feeling going through the whole album with a mood that the band has managed to capture within the recordings of these 11 songs, the music feels close with a nerve that you can almost touch and that's a good sign because music is an art which is all about moving people. I hope other reviewers won't accuse them as being Coldplay clones because Tourist are more than just your average pop/rock band in the Coldplay vein, their debut contains 41 minutes that will last for years."
