Roonie is the musical moniker of Michaela Pointon, an Auckland based indie-pop artist. Her songs about growth, loneliness and love are sprinkled with electronic touches. They are self reflective and vulnerable while still expressing strength and hope.

Michaela grew up in Taupo, where at age 12 she realised she wanted to write songs and so learned guitar. She began performing three years later and released her EP Human Nature in her last year of school.

The craft of songwriting captivated Michaela and in 2019 she moved to Auckland to pursue music.

However, the romantic dream of moving to ‘the big city’ quickly gave way to a feeling of being lost, within herself and the city. This started her rite of passage discovering independence, confidence and adopting a new name.

Roonie marks the beginning of a new chapter for Michaela, as she grasps life’s challenges with a surety in both her personal and musical identity.

My Heart is the first in a series of singles as Roonie. The song about self-discovery begins with a twinkling arpeggiator, wide synths, and percussion soaked in reverb. Its expansive soundscape explores rich vocals, vibrant organs, driving guitars and a catchy chorus.

“I found myself deeply lost in heartbreak, while dealing with living in a new city for the first time. My Heart was a chance for me to reflect on my loneliness. Putting it into words helped me to be brutally honest with myself, so I was able to move on and stand on my own two feet again,” Roonie said.
