Weightless made its debut in late May when it premiered on one of New Zealand’s leading radio stations, Hauraki. Listen to Weightless HERE and HERE
The catchy indie-rock tune, with its melancholic undertones, is all about belonging and being yourself. The video aptly captures a day in the life of a songwriter who is stuck in a monotonous 9 to 5.
“The employee (Cal) is managed by an aggressive and ultra bolshie boss. Cal is a bit of a space cadet and spends his time daydreaming about one day writing music and singing in a band. The boss constantly snaps Cal doing what he loves; dancing and singing throughout the office,” explains Calileo.
The video, which features a cameo from Will Thomas (who is one half of the pop duo Sachi) as the boss, was made by renowned NZ director Taylor Mansfield, who has worked with the likes of Benee. “I hope that people get a good laugh from the video,” says Calileo. “It’s about doing what you love, no matter what it takes or whatever the sacrifices might be.”
Calileo - AKA Callum Martin - first made his mark in Auckland’s renowned and now defunct indie-rock band The Checks. ‘Weightless’ is the first single from Callum who says he settled on the artist name of Calileo as a homage to the historic character, Galileo.
As a songwriter and guitarist in the 2000's for The Checks, Callum developed an ear for production from a young age. The band spent 10 years together, and found themselves opening for and touring with international heavyweights such as REM, The Killers, The Hives, AC/DC, Muse, and Oasis.
