Theia’s critically acclaimed mixtape 99% Angel has been given a makeover by some of the most exciting names in the electronic world.
The alt-pop artist from New Zealand released the four-track mixtape in May, receiving rave reviews from the likes of Billboard Magazine, which described Theia as “one of the most exciting pop voices to emerge from New Zealand in the last five years”.
Theia will now drop remixes of each of the tracks starting with Kitty Kat, which was released on July 10.
The futuristic bop is reworked by LA-based producer and artist Gurldoll. Theia’s distinct ethereal vocals, and trademark heavy bass remain intact. But blended with Gurldoll’s bedroom production of lo-fi trap and catchy cyber pop, Kitty Kat is taken to new places.
A Frat Boyz remix by the legendary Magik J will follow on July 24. UK-born, NZ-based, Magik J is a renowned house DJ and producer with some 50 international releases to his name, including remixes for Kimbra and The Naked And Famous.
The mixtape’s title track, 99% Angel is given a new twist by Sydney-based Oh Boy, with the remix dropping on August 7. A triple J Unearthed favourite, Oh Boy is one of Australia’s most sought-after rising producers. He’s collaborated with Cub Sport, Golden Vessel, Mallrat and Ninajirachi and is known for his signature glistening pop songs.
Rounding off the remix roll-out is rising Australian star Banoffee and her take on Celebrity, which is out on August 21. The Melbourne-born, LA-based singer-songwriter and producer has toured with Taylor Swift and Charli XCX and represents the new wave of mutant pop bubbling up from the queer club underground.
Each of the four electronic heavyweights bring their own unique flair to the songs and offer fans a new take on the mixtape, which has proved a winner on the underground alt-pop scene, with Theia spending much of her lockdown playing cyber shows for big-named clubs such as New York-based Really Like To Party and LA-based Subculture.
Theia is one of alt-pop music’s most idiosyncratic acts. Her burgeoning catalogue showcases an artist who is unafraid to push boundaries sonically and lyrically. She first emerged in 2015 with the exquisite R’n’B-infused Silver Second, which she followed with 2016’s breakout hit Roam. Her debut EP received three nominations at the 2017 NZ Music Awards and a nod for ‘Breakthrough Artist’ at the 2017 Georgie Awards. She returned in early 2019 with her second EP, Not Your Princess, which received two nominations in the 2019 Waiata Maori Music Awards.
Theia is an accomplished songwriter who has twice made the final shortlist in the ‘Top 40/Pop’ category in the International Songwriting Competition. This year her song, Not Your Princess, was placed third (unpublished) and received an honorable mention in the Top 40/Pop category.
Theia has opened for acts such as Sia, Charli XCX, Tones And I, Portugal. The Man, LEON and Mika. She has also played at many of NZ’s biggest festivals and earlier this year she headlined the Heaps Gay party at Sydney Mardi Gras alongside Dorian Electra.
