Tazman Jack’s star continues to rise with the release of his latest single Myself. The video for the single can be seen here. The artist’s debut album, Eyes Closed, will be released in November.
Hailing from Dargaville — the kumara capital of New Zealand — Tazman Jack (Nga Puhi, Ngati Whatua) has a smooth voice and amazing guitar skills that have been inspired by legends Stevie Ray and Eric Clapton. From the age of 13, he has been playing guitar and covering all sorts of songs. He’s played regular slots at bars around Auckland (such as Goode Brothers, New Lynn and The Corner Bar, Howick) and has also been sharing covers of his favourite artists and songs on YouTube from his home studio.
Tazman Jack won the Mai FM Big Break in 2017 with his song Think About You. After releasing a few singles and getting some love on urban radio in 2018, Taz started to work with other writers and producers, such as Tom Lee from Woodcut Studios and Rory Noble. This experience has seen his songwriting flourish, and he has since gone on to write, record and produce his own album. His most recent single, Eyes Closed, was playlisted on Mai FM and saw the NZ On Air funded video feature on heavy rotation on Edge TV.
Tazman Jack’s sound sits somewhere between the guitarist/pop singer styles of Jack Johnson and John Mayer, and the soulful Kiwi roots of Six60. Three songs from the upcoming album have been supported by NZ On Air, including Myself.
“Myself is about realising you have an unhealthy relationship with someone or something and the best way to overcome that addiction is to put your own health and needs first, by loving yourself,” says Taz. “With the entire Eyes Closed album, I wanted to make songs that express that things can be more than what they seem. Just looking at the surface doesn't give you the full picture.”
