Eli Moore went from international cruising musician to bedroom producer this year, recording, producing and mixing Home Skillet (released July 3) in his bedroom up in fair Northland. With complex lyrics and jazzy changes simmering over crispy beats, the record symbolizes a shift for Eli.
"I still love what I did with Ship Life (his 2017 debut release), but with some twenty other people involved on that one, and writing arrangements for everybody, that way is a lot of stress and even more money. I just figured for this one, I’d do it all myself".
Inspired by a scene in the film 'Baby Driver', Eli jumped into sampling himself, taking the old advice to 'put her in a song' literally, on lead single The Thought. Following that, there’s the parody rap of Catholic Playah and the throwback RnB flavors of Babe, You Should Be With Me and Simple Love. Ending with an intimate bit of bedroom pop, Tii Rak goes out to his foreign sweetie.
Pushing that commitment to DIY even further, Eli drew up a storyboard and sent it to a friend, Kenzie Alan. Both in love with 90s cartoons, The Thought became a canvas for anime-inspired storytelling.
"Kenzie handled the whole project by himself over the last two months, which is ridiculous - nobody does that! And it was just two guys geeking out, sharing stuff over Google Drive until we found the thing we wanted it to be. COVID sucks…but I just don’t think we would have dug this deep, creatively, without being stuck in one place."
