A labour of love that’s come together over a number of years, the album features the already-released singles Fool, Fear, Breathe and Clear as well as new single ‘Old’ and never-before-heard songs such as Heights and Sway.
The album itself took a few years to complete, with some of the songs being almost five years old.
"Drive is the oldest song on the album and initially wasn't going to be on it, but I felt it belonged in its own body of work so I ended up including it and was super happy I did. Making a record is a really huge process and I just wasn't familiar with any of it. I tried taking short cuts and doing things out of order, which ultimately made more work later when we had to go back and fit stuff. But definitely learnt so much from making this, and now I'm really excited to finish my next one"
The name Left Behind comes as a reflection of her late start in music and where she is in her journey.
“I started later in music than all my friends, so I've always felt like I was one step behind everyone else. There are a few songs on the album that reflect that, and the name Left Behind definitely reflects that also.”
The album weaves together a rich tapestry of dark electronic pop and was made with help from a cast of talented producers and co-writers, including the record’s main producer Sombear, co writer Brad Hale, well-known New Zealanders Alisa Xayalith and Aaron Short (both from The Naked And Famous); Chelsea Jade; Sam McCarthy (Boyboy) and Leroy Clampitt and American musician Cacie Dalager.
So Below made her musical debut in 2015 with the song Drift, while still based in New Zealand. From there she honed her own sound, layering heavily processed vocals and harmonies over simple, yet dark, laptop beats. She delved deeper into darker electro-pop territory on her self-titled debut EP and further reinforced her unique goth-pop vibe with her second EP, II.Find So Below here:
