Today 2020's Smokefree Rockquest band winners Red Wav release their debut single.
South Auckland based hip-hop funk fusion band Red Wav is the joining together of 6 Aorere College and Marcellin College musicians - Jesica Siva on lead vocals, Kristian Vili on guitar and vocals. Andrew Fai'ai on keyboard, Culistofa Petelo on drums, and Gene Sipaia on bass.
Mother Lover was written and performed by the band as a part of their winning Smokefree Rockquest entry, and was recorded at Parachute Studios with producer Chris Mac (Six60).
Last year, along with over 600 other musical acts nationwide, Red Wav worked within the restrictions around socials gatherings to participate in Smokefree Rockquest 'On Screen' - an adaption of the live programme, working online via video submission. Red Wav worked hard to put together to write and perform the songs that would take them to the national final - and then to take out the whole competition.
About their winning performance in the 2020 Smokefree Rockquest National Final, musician Julia Deans said “Red Wav have their whole performance schtick down, from the intro right down to after the last beat. And holy moly, that rhythm section."
On entering the music industry, bass player Gene Sipao says “I feel like we’re like really blessed to up here - and I feel like there’s a lot of up and coming talent on the south side and I would love to see all my brothers and sisters, and all that stuff, to really be up there in the music industry as well.”
