Downfall of Humanity have unleashed their newest EP offering, Deceit, on the world today!
Downfall of Humanity is a 5-piece melodic metal band from Auckland, New Zealand. They released
their debut full length album Suffer The Silence, in 2016, followed up with singles Enemy and
Apocalypse in 2019 and 2020 respectively. These singles both came with accompanying music
videos. Highlights of their career to date include playing to a jam-packed Dead Witch (Auckland) at
Blitz Metal Fest in June 2021, opening for Alien Weaponry (Tauranga) in 2020, and having opened
for iconic acts Eluveitie, Antagonist A.D., 8 Foot Sativa and Devilskin. They made it to the National
Finals of the NZ Battle of the Bands, at the Kings Arms (RIP) in 2017.
Muzic.net.nz were at the recent Blitz Metal Fest, and said, "The rhythm section of Ben Pegman (bass) and Ben Bakker (drums, BVs) keep the bottom locked down, and then in Alex Carleton and Bryce Patten they have two of the strongest guitarists around, tight in with each other, switching between support and lead as the need arises. Then of course at the front is Daniel Carleton who is a powering presence, not only due to the sheer size of the man but the way he switches between different vocal styles, always in control, with a commanding baritone which can switch to something dirty and nasty. System of a Down are a major influence on the guys, but they also mix in power metal, melodic metal and so much more in what they provide. It doesn’t matter what the sub-genre is, this is metal to the nth degree.”
When asked to describe the EP, guitarist/composer Bryce Patten had this to say:
"Deceit is a melodic, hook laden song - and hence is the single, with a music video. The
instrumentation is big but not over-the-top, allowing the vocals to take centre stage. The
ending chorus of this one might have the most layers of vocals on it of any DOH song to date, it
sounds huge!
The video was shot over the course of a three-date tour in November 2020. We took
videographer Will Slingsby with us in the van, he captured every soundcheck and performance
of the song at the shows. He has cut this footage together into one epic multi-stage live
performance video.
Litany of Hate is definitely the heaviest and most modern sounding song we've written, so we
decided to approach our good mates Pale Flag (a seriously heavy band) to see if their vocalist
Isaac Drakeley would be interested in guesting on the song. He was dead keen and is now all
over the track. His vocals in combination (and 'duet') with Daniel's sound monstrous.
One More Lie is classic DOH, a combination of heavy riffs and cheesy melodies. It's got the
most 'sections' of any of the songs on the EP, in a similar vein to Crushing Down from the first
album - there's some repeating themes and call-backs going on. The bridge section of this song
might be the most epic sounding bit of the EP, I think.
Voices is pure DOH heaviness. The main riff is driving and pounding at a good headbanging
tempo. The verses have a stop-start 'breathing space' to them, and then the chorus is super
intense - big screams, solid double kicks, and matching rhythm guitars. We like to end our live
sets with this song and wanted to end the EP with the same huge energy.
With the first record, we were trying to learn how to record while we were recording it. Then with the two singles Enemy and Apocalypse, we had that bit of experience to draw on, which made for a much more professional sounding end result. The plan for what has become the Deceit EP was to record it all in studio, but the Covid-19 lockdowns of 2020 sank that ship. We went back to the home recording setup, which by that point was starting to run fairly smoothly, and I think this set of tracks sounds even better for it."
