Soaked in synths and glittering atmosphere, Saski (AKA Mikhail Birch) carries her smooth, dreamy vocals into emotive and nostalgic territory. Moving from lush verses into soaring choruses, Saski reflects on the fluidity of life and changes in relationships.
“Fading Out Slowly is about friendships and life’s seasons; when your social circle starts changing and you realise that’s okay,” explains Saski. “It’s about giving yourself the permission to say ‘goodbye’ and recognising that these people were a part of your life for a particular time. It’s okay to naturally fade out with each other, but you can carry everything you learned from that connection to the new ones you’ll make.”
Recorded in Auckland and finished in Sydney at Ralph Street Studios, it was a run in with an old friend that prompted the inspiration for the single.
“The morning of my writing session I bumped into an old friend, a friendship of years that had naturally faded out and grown apart,” says Saski. “Going into the studio helped me to process this, uncover the feelings associated with it, and realise it’s something to normalise in relationships.”
Fading Out Slowly is the third single to be released off Saski’s debut EP Golden Hours, following the soaring and successful releases Pretty Little Island and Golden Hours.
After travelling the globe and primarily being based in the US, Nelson-born Saski has had an impressive string of releases. With her first single Faking Bright now at over 9 million plays on Spotify alone, her follow up singles Independent and Set Fire also sit at over 1 millions plays each.
Her debut EP Golden Hours, out May 13, continues the electric Saski sound of rich, expansive soundscapes and dreamy vibes. So keep an ear out for this bold kiwi artist; there’s lots of exciting things in store!
