Fast becoming a household name in New Zealand’s pop scene, singer/songwriter Lévyne is back on April 1st with I Don’t Think It’s Me, funded by NZ on Air and a self-described “pop playground” that her and key collaborator Harry Charles explored and tried to make sense of. With an infectious hook and loud, colourful production, I Don’t Think It’s Me is a fan favourite from her regular live shows throughout 2021 and a welcome beacon of light and individuality during what has been and is still a difficult time for artists everywhere.
Signalling the start of a brand new chapter sonically, Lévyne is an ever-changing kaleidoscope of creative liberation, and while Losing Sleep was a window to her past — I Don’t Think It’s Me looks ahead to the future, as uncertain as it may seem. Having spent the last few years piecing together an EP out of Harry’s Charles’s converted studio garage, and taking inspiration from artists like Charli XCX and The Japanese House, the two have allowed themselves the time to get it right and have lives alongside it. Accompanying the single a few weeks after release is a music video by Oscar Keys, who has been behind Lévyne’s visual landscape since Misconceptions in 2020.
On the meaning behind the song, she says “I wrote it at such a hard time, but I look back on it now with a lot of love and compassion. It’s brought me so much joy as we’ve worked on it, rehearsed it, played it at numerous shows. I’ve never been particularly interested in fitting some cookie-cutter purpose with music and it feels like the level of detail and life I’ve always wanted for my personal songs.”
I Don’t Think It’s Me is set for release on April 1st.
