Idiosyncratic experimental music explorer Anamnesis from Aotearoa New Zealand has created and released a new work called Coms on a range of streaming platforms.
Anamnesis is the assumed name of an artist who has set out to make music that's ‘wilfully obscure and difficult’, and Coms is the first step of a path less travelled in this regard.
The central idea for Coms was to adapt the sonic framework behind Alvin Lucier's groundbreaking work I Am Sitting In A Room, to create a vocal based on the text “I am trying to talk to you, but I cannot get you to listen to me’. This was blended with the kind of rhythmic setting derived from the likes of Tricky, Massive Attack and Portishead. The intentional 'misspelling’ of the title Coms is deliberate, reflecting the thematic context of the piece: essentially that 21st century organisations have evolved a new word, "Comms", which is intended to describe communication, but it actually results in messaging which is blurred and indecisive due to over-repetition.
With this first release, Anamnesis plans to establish a musical path that ranges through as wide a range of themes and contexts as possible ,with the act of creation being its own primary reward.
Or, in a telling quote from the Artist Themself:
'Prétentious,Moi? Mais oui, certainement!
Coms has already been around the world – it was mixed in America by Martin Porter, part of a wave of exciting new producers, and mastered with the finely-tuned ear of Kirikirioa local Andi Verse, whose wide scope of previous works include recordings by Simon Hadid and Lee Double.
Coms can be heard now on all streaming Platforms.
