We're thrilled to share the fifth episode of UTR presents Trash Recital Season 2 — starring LEAO, produced by Sports Team and made with support from NZ On Air!
Watch LEAO perform Tumutumu Mauga | Trash Recital Season 2 Episode 5 HERE.
For each episode of Trash Recital we've invited some of our favourite Aotearoa artists into the UTR studios to perform one of their songs, re-created using everyday items selected from Sports Team's stockpile of recycled junk. Trash Recital not only provides a launchpad for stunning reimaginings of recent (and soon to be) classic tunes, but also the perfect opportunity for a chinwag with our local musical heroes.
Our new episode stars LEAO, the hauntological South Pacific post-punk project of Tāmaki-born Samoan songwriter David Feauai-Afaese with bandmates Larsen Tito-Taylor (WhyFi), Navakatoa Tekela-Pule (Strangelove) and Levi Gemmell. Reimagining in-studio their unreleased song Tumutumu Mauga (meaning "top of the mountain" in Samoan), the group spoke about how the tune arose from Feauai-Afaese's explorations in Igi Samoa fingerpicking and reflected on their sonically boundless project's own "life being." Experience the Noa Records crew performing Tumutumu Mauga using a garden hose, racket, saw and even a car tire while making shapes behind the Trash Recital desk.
