Welcomer, Wellington's proponents of wilted pop, are today releasing their second single A Steely Dan Covers Band.
The 5-piece, centred around main songwriter Miles Sutton, write intricate, raw and beautiful pop songs. Their first single, Cicadas 3, was a Student Radio Network favourite, reaching #1, as well as making #18 on the NZ Top 40 Hot NZ Singles chart. With wry and melancholic lyrics, and a swooning duet chorus, the song chewed over forgiveness and blame, and not being able to let go.
The unsteadiness of memory continues as a theme in second single A Steely Dan Covers Band, which begins with the line "I can see you live on at the very worst with your name as at least several people’s passwords". The verses ebb and flow around seeing the titular Steely Dan covers band and watching a friend turn 30. The song then breaks open in the second half with a feature from Daniel McBride (Sheep Dog & Wolf) recorded in a warm haze while they had Covid. Both singles will appear on Welcomer's upcoming EP (due October 2022).
The band will celebrate the release with a show at Wellington's Pyramid Club on Saturday August 27, with support from Mystery Waitress and labelmates shannengeorgiapetersen.
A Steely Dan Cover Band is available on streaming platforms and Bandcamp via Papaiti Records.
