Drummer and founding member of The Dance Exponents/Exponents, Harry Harallambi has released his first solo single, Be Kind, under the pseudonym Harry & The Uninvited.
Now in his late 50's, Harry recorded the track in his home studio in 2021 during the depths of New Zealand’s Covid-19 lockdowns.
Be Kind is written, produced and performed by Harry, with vocals by Robbie McColluch.
After more than 40 years of drumming in one of the country's most successful bands, a Hall of Fame induction, a TV movie, documentary, bathroom walls full of gold records and rubbing shoulders with the likes of David Bowie and The Rolling Stones… Harry felt that it might be a good time to learn music.
“Counting to four has its limitations,” says Harry. “So I’ve been teaching myself piano, guitar and how to sing, with a little help and encouragement from my musical buddies”.
“The result is Be Kind, a song for animals,” says Harry, an ardent animal lover whose large Ohakune property has become a home for numerous rescued companion and farm animals over the years. “They don’t have a voice, but perhaps I can give them a song.”
Turangi Maori, Robbie McColluch, sang on the track. The pair are good friends who met through a shared love of skateboarding.
“Robbie wasn’t meant to be on the song. I sent him an early version with me singing in my low Lenoard Cohen style, seeking his opinion. He replied with his beautiful voice and Maori strum. I was sold”.
Robbie recently acquired a Master of Science in Astro and Particle Physics from the University of Tübingen in Germany, where he resides.
