“It’s not a world full of strangers when we go back generations. When I reach out I am known.”
That’s the basis for Call My Name, a catchy pop song written by hyper-pop artist Venice Qin for New Zealand Chinese Language Week this year.
The song is being released at the same time as NZCLW2022, which runs from September 25 to October 1.
New Zealand Chinese Language Week is about encouraging New Zealanders to try out some Chinese language phrases, and to celebrate Chinese language, culture, and food. NZCLW Charitable Trust chair Jo Coughlan says New Zealand is a diverse and vibrant society.
“When we can make connections through the use of language – either through useful phrases or even saying people’s names correctly – this is important.”
Venice Qin says the song taps into that feeling.
“Growing up in a Chinese household, the importance of my name has always been apparent to me. My surname ‘Qin’ connects me to my ancestors, the roots of who I am. I believe that everyone is innately attached to their name, so when people say it, we feel seen and known. Ultimately, this song is a call for connection. To me, this is what NZCLW is about; connecting to the Chinese culture and connecting with each other.”
Jo Coughlan says the NZCLW Trust is grateful to Venice Qin for dedicating the song to this year’s New Zealand Chinese Language Week celebrations.
“It’s great to see some new ways of marking the week. People can listen to this song, read the children’s book we publish in Mandarin Chinese, English, and Te Reo Māori, and they can get together with friends and family to share stories and some useful Chinese phrases over a delicious meal of dumplings during the week from Sunday September 25 to Saturday October 1.”
