Pipsy is the musical project of Paul Pouwels McMillan (they/them), a songwriter and producer based in Te Whanganui-a-Tara.
Pipsy crafts alternative pop with poise and precision. Their tracks are full with warm melodies and tender vocal harmonies. Listeners will be reminded of the devotional jangle made by British post-punks in the 80s, as well as the stirring synth pop of the early 2000’s.
Today Pipsy shares their thoughtful third single Underdog, which is taken from their upcoming debut album All You Ever Wanted (out November 2).
Underdog follows the previous singles All You Ever Wanted, and Hey, Ok!. Both tracks featured on prized playlists such as Apple Music's New Music Daily and New in Indie,
as well as Spotify's Fresh Cuts. Underdog is sure to follow in their footsteps.
Underdog
is a masterstroke in considered songwriting, a slow burn that is as anthemic as it is ambient. "While I was writing this record I was playing a lot of keyboards and synths, so the song was written entirely on a Wurlitzer. I wanted it to be a reflective song that started out dreamy, and then kicked in half way through, reminiscent of modern psychedelic artists that I dig like Tame Impala and Unknown Mortal Orchestra."
"The song reflects on feeling like you’re an underdog. It’s a bit of a philosophical reflection on how to process those feelings, and to remind yourself to keep going, even when you don’t feel like you’re making progress - because you are! The song is a celebration of people that put up with a lot of s*#t that life throws their way, and yet still manage to carry on, being kind, and doing great things."
