Up-and-coming alternative pop artist and producer Crystal has today released her stunning debut EP, Garlic Ice Cream, which features the bold new single We Feel The Same. The EP marks a significant milestone, showcasing one of Aotearoa’s brightest new talents.
Crystal has been making waves with a streak of killer singles, including Perplexed, The Chase and One Dollar Pizza, which all feature on Garlic Ice Cream.
The previously released songs sit alongside We Feel The Same; an empowering and anthemic track, which Crystal wrote after experiencing a panic attack in front of her class during a presentation.
“I think the pressure of everything happening in my life hit me all at once. I wrote this song as a way of trying to make sense of a very vulnerable and embarrassing situation. After the incident, my good friend came to comfort me and made me realise that these things are normal, they happen. It got me thinking about how sharing personal experiences with your friends and family is so important in getting perspective and understanding that you’re really never alone,” says Crystal.
We Feel The Same is the final step in the release of the five-track EP, Garlic Ice Cream, which Crystal started when she was at university four years ago.
“At times it’s felt frustrating that things have taken so long, like the momentum has come and gone, but I’ve never felt more prepared or ready to release this music, which is what comes with growth and patience,” she says. “Garlic Ice Cream reflects years of growth, learning, love and struggle, of navigating my surroundings and self-discovery.”
It is the perfect summary for a record, which is soaked in youthful sentiment; setting the scene for a whole new chapter for the young artist, who was and raised in Te-Whanganui-A-Tara/Wellington and is now based in Tāmaki Makaurau/Auckland.
Crystal made her live music debut in 2019 while studying Commercial Music at Massey University, playing Wellington festivals, Cuba Dupa and Newtown Festival, and supporting Australian artist KIAN, before ever having released any music online.
Her debut single, My Flowers Are Dead then featured on TVNZ’s body swap comedy series Life Is Easy. Her sophomore release The Chase landed on Spotify's 'New Music Friday AU & NZ', 'Pop n Fresh', and ‘EQUAL AU & NZ’ playlists. Perplexed also featured on ZM’s Late Night Show.
